Default Your basketball story

Since obviously we all like basketball, or the Raptors we probably all have a story to tell about how you got into basketball or where you play or have played. I think that since we are mostly a younger crowd that we probably play the occasional game.

I played on my school basketball team for 3 years and played on a neighbourhood team. I am also one of the better free throw shooters in Southern Ontario.

Great idea...

I, like most kids living in former Yugoslavia, was playing hoops all the time... as a kid I did play street ball with some guys who turned pro and even reached NBA.

I never had a great shot or an awesome handle but was tall enough and extremely athletic so I played as a PF on my high school team... being in high school that had 3/4 girls was great for dating but our team sucked since there were not enough guys to form a good team... nevertheless we always played hard... I use to rebound like a beast and dunk over everybody... you know... krazy's version of JYD.

Played in Oakville for three years as a swingman and finished as one of the top five teams in Ontario for two of those years. In grade nine I played on a GTA all-star team (top players from Brampton, Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, Hamilton, East Toronto) with Tristan Thompson who right now looks like a lock to make the NBA in a couple years.

Haven't really grown much since grade nine so that's kind of hampered my ability to play small forward at higher levels of AAU ball, but I did play point guard for a few years in high school. Right now I just play for fun on a couple intramural teams at school but I try to get out to the court every day if I have the time.

i was always that athletic kid who could jump really high and run for days.
in highschool i was starting SG for each of my 5 years. i always thought i was better than i really was and would talk shit all day long. it would cause problems sometimes and other teams would hate me.
my handles were poor, but my streaky shot would sometimes be unstoppable.
i always prided myself on D, and would cover my guy like the plague.
i miss my highschool ball days so much because just being on the team with my friends and travelling to different schoools, and going away to tournaments was amazing.
my career ended in OAC when i tore up my ankle pretty bad. after that, ive never been the same.

i still remember my best game ever... i hit 6 three pointers and finished off with 26 points. i was on fire that game. we lost in OT though, but i hit the tying buzzer beater in regulation.

basketball used to be my life when i was a teenager. we'd play all day long and wouldnt ever get tired.

So I have played in only my grade 6 team LOL. I stopped trying out after for no reason in particular. I like watching Ball but I am the best on my street. Only if I grew a little more I'd tryout but I am too short to do anything

I was the leading scorer in some sort of YMCA league when I was 13. Our team lost all of our games that season and I averaged around 45 points a game.

I should have demanded a trade.

Once in like grade 3, my class was in the library. I was almost time to go, and I hadn't picked a book yet. So I just picked any random book. I turned out to be a basketball stars book. I read all about Kobe and I was fascinated.

then i turned on the TV, and I see that guy who I read about, no joke, it was right at this part of the game.

I was hooked

then a couple years later, my aunts and uncles decide to buy me some Raptors tickets. Up until then I hadn't know much about the raptors. So we went down... I think they were playing Indiana...anyway, the Raps blow them out and the rest is history

I played in middle school and then for a while in high school, but ran into two problems. 1) coaches tended to not like a big man who could shoot better than play the inside game (think Andrea) and 2) my game peaked in grade 9. Everyone else was just starting to get better, but that was as good as my game was going to get. I can still shoot it though!

But I remember the day I fell in love with the game. I was 10. We had just moved into a new house in Brampton and my dad had just set up my basketball net in the driveway. This kid down the street, a geeky white kid with glasses was SCHOOLING me in my own driveway in front of some local girls. It was embarrassing. Anyway, the concrete that was poured for the garage was a little higher than the interlocking brick in the driveway, so there was a little lip there. Sometimes if you took a shot and got nothing but net, the ball would fall to the ground, hit the lip and come rocketing back at you. I knew about it, but this kid didn't. So as he took a shot over me and then raced around me talking smack, the ball went in...SWISH...came down, hit the lip and rocketed right back into his face, breaking his glasses and giving him a bloody nose. He went home, I had the two local girls alone to myself and all I could think was, I LOVE THIS GAME.

Started playing in Grade 4, made the team in grade 5 and 6. I still remember the practices being hard as hell, and in the tournament one fucker taking shots everytime he touched it, I still despise that guy.

Started watching in GR 6 or 7, I remember watching the 2nd half of the CHI JAZZ game 6 with my dad.

After that, I watched Raptors games at my best friend house in 99, he was a big VC fan and I was really clueless about the NBA but it was so fun to watch. I was a hockey guy back then. I cheered against the Raptors at that time cuz that was my thing back then, cheering against all Canadian teams for whatever reason. Then I started to watch NBC games, and the Lakers were my team for a long while until I started watching TOR games since they were on all the time, and my like for the Lakers went away once they got Malone and Payton.

Kobe was my favorite player growing up, KG has been since about year 3.

I fell in love with the game after watching the 1990 McDonalds Open on tape delay from Rome. The New York Knicks dominated and instantly became my favorite team.
To keep us out of trouble, my parents bought my brother and I a membership at the local YMCA. Hoops became my obsession and I proceeded to play 4-5 times a week there for the next 6 years or so.
I played high-school ball in a very successful program for three seasons, winning an OFSSA bronze medal in grade 12. I was a 3-point specialist and 6th man my OAC year.

I've since left the Knicks behind and have been a die-hard Raptors fan since the franchise was first announced.
After taking the better part of a decade away from playing the game, I've started playing pick-up once a week again. I can still more than hold my own against players little more than half my age. The f'n men's league here plays on Tuesday nights. I work rotating shifts so I can't join which is a real piss-off for me.

I started playing competitive basketball in grade 8-12. I started off as a Forward in 8th grade then since the competition started to get bigger I became a 2 guard in 12th grade. Our team won the district championships in 2003 when I was 8th grade and I earned defensive player of the game honors. From grade 8-10 our team was in a bit of a slump because of some coaching issues. In grade 11-12 we were rejuvenated but the competition in BC was far too competitive for our team to contend in any major tournaments. I started watching ball in the late 90's. The most memorable game I watched was San Antonio vs The Lakers in game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.

My FT wasn't too good. Probably in the low 70% range. However, no one will break my benchpress record of 225 pounds x 18. BTW I'm into weight lifting now.

Started in 6th grade and played for the next 7 years. Played one trough five depending on the match ups mostly. Gave up on chasing career after deciding that school is the better option. I didn't want to be just an average player but I didn't want to waste my life playing basketball either. Cue Sisters of Mercy - I want more.

I still like basketball but I don't like what it has become at the pro level. The referee and betting fiasco last year really disappointed me to a point I prefer good old hard street ball to this 'professional sports' thing.
