currently studying about the institutions of ontario in my DSW program and listening to stories about children who had no chance of showing their true potiental is really sad. Really shows how much the science of eugenics was a joke

ever hear about a professor named northrop frye? anyways in english we were discussing "don't you think its time we start thinking?" an aritcle about how ideas are formed, intelligence and a bit about the educational system. He had some ideas about how developing literacy allows for development of ideas. You can't really put an idea into words if you can't explain it. He also criticized the education system and the method of whcich we are taught that does not allow us to think properly. It's a really interesting piece. I don't remember the full article nor have i been able to find it online. My personal opinion on why some students reach their potential and others do not is completely conditional. If the curriculum would focus on the needs of the student rather than what the student needs to learn, more students would reach their potential.

Yep I had to read it for English this year.

Here is the article if you want to read it. I liked it, I agreed with what he said too. People act really stupid when texting or instant messaging each other. I hate it when people use a lot of short forms or abbreviations. I used to do it too but I stopped after a while

There was a study conducted. The people who can write and speak properly could also use abbreviations and shortf forms properly while those who couldnt speak properly couldnt even use short forms properly. I don't think it's really a matter of dumbing down with abbreviations rather than making things quicker. Some would say language is evolving into the direction of using more abbreviations or short forms. I use short forms and abbreviations when appropriate but I can still manage to write properly when I need to.

@ 'trane, @ fancylad, and @ thought, I believe its both a 'hand of God' AND Jacob himself putting in the work to develop as he has. Sometimes a person juss has a talent (that they obviously hone). It's something innate that he has, not something that can be given to him from others by way of education structure, social circumstance, or 'happy coincidence.'

If dictating circumstances gets credit for how Jacob has developed, then the education system would've produced alot more kids like him already (and they'd still be in the minority!). Of course, they haven't. The education system can only do so much. And this kid is such an anomoly that no one can ever take credit for the way how he does his work: It's all him and nothing else except plenty of love & support from his family.

The only thing parents can do is give their children plenty of love, affection, discipline, impress your values upon them, and provide different avenues for them to experience and enjoy life (sports, video games, books, bikes, etc.) to develop their life experiences. No point trying to dictate their direct career paths, as that's not usually the parent's choice to give in the first place (though I'm sure the plethora of idiot puckhead parents who think they're fasttracking thier kid to NHL stardom will beg to differ).

And even when circumstances are the same for individuals in the same household, the kids are going to react different from eachother Ie- Robin Lopez is on his way to developing into a fine starting caliber roleplaying center, while his twin brother Brook is on his way to developing into an all-star caliber center. Snap even in my household, my older brother has grown up to be a CFO for a good company, and I on the other hand don't have much of that talent or disposition (I'm good at algebra, but nothing beyond that). I'm smart in the things I've found myself to be good at, but my mind isn't nearly as quick as his. And I grew up in the same household as him.

@ jeffb, that Jacob kid seems very confident in himself, and while that undoubtedly comes mainly from his parents love & support for him, he shows no trace (that I can see, anyways) of kids picking on him at his age. It's also not the 80s-90s anymore, as nerds are cool nowadays. Especially in this current economic climate! Perhaps when the rest of America starts getting prosperous again, then us nerds will fall back again to the bottom of the social totem pole.

My real worry for the kid is what the power hungry & two faced Obama administration, most potential Republican candidates, and power-hungry criminals in the FBI, CIA and 'military industrial complex' would have for him and how they'll try to bend him to thier will as he grows up (much like how Dr. Vannevar Bush and his extensive network effectively bullied and strong-armed Dr. Albert Einstein and Dr. Robert Oppenheimer into developing the fuckin nuclear bomb, away from their original goals of astronomy & UFO research, the reasons why they wanted to develop as scientists in the first place).

B/c this kid has an elite mathematical mind, he'll be able to figure out things in all areas of science & astronomy even better than how Einstein did, given that he's got a higher IQ than him and the information age we're living in now. And what stems from this is the fact that power hungry people in American gov't will stop at nothing to try to subjugate him to their own will and purposes, and if they can't have him in a way they want, they'd do what they can to sabotage his work, those he'd choose to work with, and some may even go so far as to try to incapacitate or even murder him. Given that the political climate of today's world is already alot like that of the Cold War era (and not the 'relative' peace of the 80s & 90s that has set the backdrop for how we see our world now, in the post 9/11 era), and thus people in power are even more inclined to horde it than in more prosperous and peaceful times, I feel fully justified in having these fears for this kid. Especially w/that two-faced megalomaniac motherfucker Obama in office.

I have a brother that is similar to this, hes a PHD in physics and working for NASA right now.

I personally can't say I knew him all that well growing up, as he was always off at school or doing something, or locked in his room doing work. The thing with him though is he acted like an every day guy, but he'd say the most random things ever about some stuff, it was wierd... I dunno I suppose I could get into it more if you liked.
