Vacation Advice Needed
I've went on tropical vacations before, but it seems that the older the get, the more I burn.

When I was a kid I didn't even put on suntan lotion a lot of the time and tanned easy.

Nowadays I have to put on suntan lotion everywhere to avoid the burns, but a few people have told me recently that before my vacation(this FRI to Dominican) I should go to a tanning bed for a 5-10 minute session a day to develop a 'base tan' so when I put suntan lotion on when I get to the Dominican, I have a much lower chance of burning and much higher chance of getting a good tan.

So my questions are this:

1. Should I go to the tanning salon the next 3 days before my trip to do this? Why/Why not?

2. What is the best+safest suntan lotion to use nowadays? My friend also says to use moisturizer at night? Please leave a comment as to what I should use throughout the day, itd be much appreciated.

I hate putting sunscreen on. I usually end up sweating when I'm in warm tropical climates. In the end it just feels horrible.

I would recommend against using a tanning bed. They should be banned. They will greatly increase your chance of getting skin cancer.

I would go with a waterproof sunblock with a decent SPF, and one of those special lotions for the face. The intensity of the sun is particularly strong these days due to thinning ozone. And if you're in the water it will reflect off the surface and be that much worse. Just lather yourself completely and then you don't have to worry about it. When i snorkel i wear a tshirt or a scuba shirt. I would also consider a hat with a brim that gives you good coverage.

From Wikipedia-

In July 2009, the IARC released a report that placed tanning beds in its highest cancer risk category, “carcinogenic to humans.” The agency, which is part of the World Health Organization (WHO), previously classified tanning beds as “probably carcinogenic.” The change comes after an analysis of more than 20 epidemiological studies indicating that people who begin using tanning devices before age 30 are 75% more likely to develop melanoma, the most deadly type of skin cancer.[30]
A 2009 Associated Press article stated, "International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas."[31]
The Irish Health Minister in August 2009 said that she is considering outlawing the industry completely given that tanning beds are dangerous and are hugely contributing to people developing skin cancer.[32]

get the spray lotion instead of the cream. easier to put on and holds up better when wet.

WEAR SUNSCREEN. And apply it twice daily at least.

Try to avoid the sun from about 11AM-3PM as well when the sun is at it's strongest. When I go away I usually get under an umbrella during those hours and take a nap (or have lunch).

Have fun dude!

its funny how back in the olden days if you have a tan that means ur in the lower class cuz you work outside. now if you have a tan that means ur pretty well off cuz u can go on vacations.

anyways, no tanning advice. i just get burn, turn red, peel and then back to normal. my skin doesn't turn any darker
