There's no point making an account if you just read celebrity tweets. The non famous people just post facebook status updates that nobody cares about and hope for a retweet from LeBron or whomever.

Yes, that's exactly why we're all on it. So LeBron can re-tweet us.

Before we all gang up on each other with reasons why Twitter is or is not stupid (both are correct), can we just agree that some people use it because it's useful to them? For me, it's given me business and made me money. I'd say that's pretty damn useful.

Doesn't mean I don't use it simply for social interaction and conversation, though. Sure I do. Just like we use this forum. (People in glass houses, and such...)

Are some people annoying as hell and using the platform incorrectly? Shit yes. But it's their prerogative to do so; I just choose not to follow 'em.

I'm talkin its useless to the dumb people that think others care about them saying something along the lines of "hey im going out today, what to do!?!?!?!?" and other such stuff...

And really, I don't use it anymore, at all too much stuff flyin down the page way too quick, anyone who has it generally would miss 99% of the stuff the people they're following would put up there, unless looking for it specifically.

OK Chiggmo i feel pretty much the same way. However, the one thing i find great about twitter is that it seems be the preferred outlet for many athletes to make themselves look foolish!

I find Twitter useful, but the reasons it is useful are also the reasons it is limited.

As mentioned already, information gets out quickly on Twitter. With hashtags and following the right accounts, you can be significantly ahead on news and information compared to traditional media, and even most websites (as Twitter is a very diverse aggregator, in a sense). I personally have used Twitter to find a lot of information on history, philosophy, and science, and I've discovered many, many new sites of maintained by people with real expertise talking about contemporary and historical research. You can also follow your friends and family for brief updates about their lives or what's going on in your area.

You don't need to post often, but that doesn't mean that you should avoid posting. Surely you sometimes have something relatively interesting to say to some people? Also, Twitter is increasingly a source of research or crowd-sourcing, which you could play a part in to contribute to intellectual fulfillment of yourself and others.

The downsides that I've experienced are:

1) There's a certain capacity to the number of followers that you can keep up on. I got stuck around 100 because the accounts I was following posted several times per day and it is just too much to keep up with.
2) The information is coming from a huge diversity of sources. When you ride the front of the information wave, and can't judge the authenticity of the information as easily because you don't know the sources well, you can end up getting fed wrong information. Sometimes, slow media has the advantage of waiting to see how a story develops.
3) The character limit is too low for me personally. Brevity is not my forte, for fear of forsaking clarity, so 140 characters is extremely difficult to manage. Also, I'm not particularly a fan of abbreviations and text-speak.

Nope. Dont have an account, dont follow it.
I find it a bit juvenile.

I guess i use google for that. Or in my case Hip Hop related websites.

I find it useful for getting quick updates in one place. I dont' facebook so it's a good way to keep up on the nba lockout as a current example.

I never tweet myself, nor do I follow any friends. Really I dont' care what they deposit in the toilet or choose to have for brunch.

Twitter is awesome! I rarely watch news on TV now cuz I get the news ahead before it goes aired on TV or published on the newspaper.
