The trip to the dentist

I haven't been to the dentist in quite some time and i have to go today. I believe i'm gonna have to get my wisdom tooth pulled since it's been giving problems. Has anyone here had that done, if so how was it? I admit it i'm an anti dentite.....can't stand the dentist. Whats the worst thing you've had done at the dentist? I'd much rather be going to the doctors then the dentist. Nothing i hate more then getting those needles in the gums. The thought make me cringe.

I find the dentist equally brutal.

I have pretty bad teeth and i don't floss as much as i should so obviously i am mostly to blame for my dentist hate and my overall dental care experience.

The worst thing i've ever had done was probably a really deep cavity that was filled. It was a big one and even the anesthetic wasn't working past a certain point. I could feel the last few drills and it wasn't pleasant. That was 3 years ago or so and recently that same tooth is starting to kind of act up. It's quite sensitive to extreme temperatures and i can sometimes feel pulsing in it. You know what that means.... likely root canal. I'm holding out though and hopefully it won't get any worse.

I don't know why you find the needles in the gum bad jeff. They're pretty painless all in all. My doc puts a little topical anesth on my gum before sticking in the needle and i feel little to nothing.

anyways... sounds like you're in for a nice day in the dental chair given how you haven't been there in a long time.

HAVE FUN BUDDY!

hahaha

I hadn't been in ages either due to a fear I'd developed over the years but I went this past October and it was fine. I had a couple cavities and I'm scheduled for a root canal after a tooth that had been problematic ever since I had my braces yanked off in 1992 finally kicked the bucket last week which caused some pretty intense pain.

I hate the needles too but I didn't feel it after the dentist rubbed another area of my gums. It's some trick they do.

Just remember to mention your phobia. They have their specific ways of dealing with patients like us and they've seen it a million times before. My dentist told me one guy was so scared, he stood in the corner of the room and cried. So they've seen it all.

Dentists will do everything they can to make it a pain-free, comfortable experience. The last thing they want is someone going off and telling everyone how horrible their experience was.

Wisdom teeth are tricky because of where they are and the fact they might be impacted. You wouldn't feel any pain during but you'd feel a dull ache after, the severity of which would depend on how complicated the tooth position was.

just have him knock you right out. you won't feel a thing (and rf will get a brief reprieve... ;) )

fancylad 03-24-2011 10:19 AM

hey aar, do you know what kind of anesthetic they give for a root canal? Is it normally just local?

I had the exact same problem with mine (my filling only lasted 6 months though) and if I can offer any advice, get it taken care of before it becomes a problem if you can. I'm on antibiotics now and had to take a percocet on the weekend after 3 painful days. Last Friday, I couldn't lay down or sit because of the pain. It's one big pain in the ass.

Yeah, they just freeze - novocaine or procaine. One of the 'caines. The worst part of a root canal is the fact it takes an hour. There's no pain involved.

I also hate the dentist even though i never had a bad experience, just dont like the feeling of people working in my mouth

m5racer 03-24-2011 12:16 PM

Stonezzzz :cookie:. That video of david is classic lol.

On another note, My last trip to the dentist (2 months ago) had me so so much pain it was insane. I went in for my regular cleaning and an hour later came out of there feeling like I had just experienced medieval mouth torture. The bitch said that she needed to do a "deep cleaning", and worked the shit out of my gums. It was so bad that when i took the bib off after i was done it was covered in blood and looked as if i just had 3 teeth pulled. It was so "deep" that i actually couldent eat any solid foods for the rest of the day because my gums were actually that sore. This was the worst cleaning experience of my life, so bad that im actually changing dentists beucase of it.....man was that a shitty day, and all i did was have my teeth cleaned

fancylad 03-24-2011 12:30 PM

cleaning is a bitch. I always bleed.

You know as much as we bitch about the dentist now, can you imagine what dentistry would have been like in the early 1900s? Or worse yet even earlier like the 1700s?

No luxury of anesthetic back then. Just think about it. The crude tools, the pain... apparently some people would have teeth made of wood or so my i have been told.

It was a major cause of death way back when. What I have now - an abscess - was called "gumboil" and before antibiotics, people would simply die from it. It'd get into the deep tissues, then the bone and then travel to either the heart or the brain. They'd say he "died of his teeth".

When i was in 6th grade, I had my tooth knocked out playing hockey. It was an adult tooth. Instead of giving me a falsey, they placed the tooth back into my head and put a cast on it and allowed it to grow back into my gums, with no root.
Pretty wild.
Until i got to grade 12 and the tooth didnt grow.

Well that wasn't so bad. I have to go back to get my wisdom tooth yanked but other then that, no cavities. :dancing:

I go to the periodontist. When I first went the pain was intense. At this point it's pretty good. My favorite memories there are of Rosanne, who did the routine scaling with me for years. She did some crazy shit. One time in the middle of summer, she starts humming Winter Wonderland while she's working on me. She kept it up for almost the entire hour. She'd change key every once in a while though. Another time she stopped abruptly, pulls the sharp instrument out of my mouth, and in all earnestness asks me, "have you ever wanted to kill someone"?

Barracuda 03-24-2011 04:47 PM

I need to find a new dentist in the west end of Toronto... anyone know of a good one?
