Default Torontonians: Can anyone help?

I realize this is an entertainment forum, but I'm afraid this won't be an entertaining post.

I'm just wondering if any of my fellow Toronto residents who populate this board can help a chick out.

Since I've moved here, I've been searching for jobs and have not yet been hired. It's been a very frustrating process, with more letdowns than I thought possible. I have a great resume; professionally done and explaining my years of administrative, writing, and media experience.

But still no job for 'Cuda.

So, I'm just wondering, do any of you know of places that are hiring? This 'recession' has taken its toll on me, and I'm fairly desperate at this point.

Any advice is appreciated.

If your willing to move to Ottawa I might be able to help you out. But unfortunately my old contacts in the GTA aren't in the business of hiring any longer.

If you don't mind if I ask, where have you been applying too lately?

Honestly Doc?

Everywhere. Especially admin assistant positions, because those should be easy to come by and I have years of experience.

Writing jobs just aren't cutting it.

A professional as yourself - Have you tried what Doc does for a living - any headhunting agencies? I used to be with one about 6-7 years ago (I used it while I was here in the summers from university) - they're called PD Bureau (bay/richmond) - they're really good.

Appreciate it, Benzo

Mango - Haven't tried that yet, I don't know much about Head Hunters. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into that.

I know it's probably not what you want, but I've been working part-time at Chapters for 2 years now -- if you'd like, I can look into a job there.

The only admin jobs around me are in our department administration offices. Have you tried sending your resume in to the U of T offices? I know people who work at the admin offices at Victoria College, Rotman's School of Finance, and the Engineering Department. I can ask around and see if they (or anyone else around campus) is hiring.

i did a bunch of jobs for pd bureau years ago. they are good. when i was in my 20's, temp agencies were a gold mine. you can try a bunch of places and see what you like without committing. also, very often companies will use temps to test run prospective hires. you work for them for a while, and if they don't like you they let the contact run out. if they do like you they pay a stipend to the temp agency and hire you full time. worked like a charm for me both in toronto and vancouver.

Temp agencies is a great way. I know a few people who go through them and end up with full time jobs.

Like I told SJ, I'll make some more calls. I work in a field that allows me access to alot of the hidden market, right now I could probably do Hamilton/Burlington/Oakville. Toronto is tougher b/c how quickly things fill up.

Kris - I applied to some UofT jobs, just recently. Most of those get hired internally, though. How's Chapters, do you like it? The Runnymede branch is near-ish to me...

'trane - I used temp agencies when I lived in St. Catharines. Got a couple good jobs through it. I'm looking into them now.

Claudius - Thanks. Yeah, Toronto, in a word, is a bitch for jobs. Too many qualified people.

Sorry to hear your troubles Cuda. Living in the Toronto area all my life I must say I never filled out a resume for all the jobs i've had. Its just that kind of city. Owners usually already know who they are targeting before the job placement is open.

However; I'm sure you'll find your niche soon enough.

And 'Cuda.. look into apply to provincial government for jobs - there are still a lot out there and if you can get your foot in the door, you'll be sitting pretty.

Personally, Chapters has been an enjoyable experience - the scheduling is pretty decent, the hours are great, the co-workers are lovely. It's really chaotic during book releases (that effing awful Twilight book is the most recent example) and during the Christmas season, but it's a lot of fun most of the time.

Well Cuda if your looking for a job to hold you over I'd suggest roaming into the food business field. Their are ALWAYS positions available in that field

if you're interested in any media jobs... mandy.com is the place, they are constantly looking for production assistants and administrative. Laid back industry, pretty flexible with hours & dress code. I almost guarantee that after watching the posts on this site for a few weeks, you'll find something that fits. Business usually REALLY picks up in feb/mar. More importantly it's the type of job where you make so many contacts that you can virtually choose your direction when you're done. I started in admin and now I've just finished doing vfx for watchmen and now I'm working on underworld 3 (they can't all be winners I guess). I read that you write as well... once you have any kind of industry experience, most doors open

check it out

Perhaps check the Toronto hospitals -- Sunnybrook just hired a new guy for the HR department. Those kinds of jobs are office-related and need no knowledge of medicine.

'Cuda - I'm with RBC and they are always hiring. The good thing is the company is so big once you're in it's easy to move around and try new things. As well, very diverse - it's not all counting coins.
