That's not surprising. That's the 'Jungle' area of Toronto. It's always been thought of as a high crime area - ever since dating back to the 1980s and probably before that time as well.

well, it's one the the city's 13 priority neighbourhoods. that's why we're here. we do neighbourhood development work in these areas. it's still saddening, and I'll always be surprised when people coldly take the lives of their neighbours.

Oh, don't get me wrong, coltrane, it's really sad, no matter the circumstance. The problem is that when I hear a shooting taking place in an area like The Jungle, I can't say that I'm surprised.

no intent to single you out here hoops. just observing on a general level - the more we refer to it as 'the Jungle' and shrug our shoulders, the more this gets swept under the rug. this is a neighbourhood full of families, and something needs to be done. suprrise, outrage and action are a necessity.

i just buy groceries at fortino's and make my own lunch most of the time. cheaper and better. that food court leaves a lot to be desired...

plus, they have good prosciutto in that fortinos.

You're right, coltrane, something needs to be done. The people of the community needs to take their area back. Hopefully the police catch the culprits and the video surveilence cameras implemented in the area will aid them. They've installed them in place like Flemingdon park (My old neighbourhood), Jane-finch/Shoreham, Parkdale, Regent Park, Jungle, Dundas Square (More crime happens there than you know)... I think the worst part are the people who are victims don't stand up and speak out. They're more content themselves on sweeping it under the rug.

i feel sorry for the family of the kid that got killed. from what i've read his dad drives a cab, but is considered a soccer god in his native Somalia. Apparently his dad is their gretzky.

it can be very difficult for many of the residents of these neighbourhoods to stand up and speak out. Many are new Canadians, often from war ravaged countries. Police represent a negative authority because of the situations in their homelands, and many of these people don't know where to access services within the city. It's too easy for those connected to crime to monopolize these areas because the communities themselves lack capacity. it's a really tough situation.
