Question Thinking of Purchasing a Tab

I recently kicked my laptop off of my couch and lost all audio functionality. I'm working on a case in school and two of the guys in my group have iPads that they use for highly functional, highly practical purposes. I really want one. I also know nothing about tablet computers.

I know the iPad is the sexy choice and it'd be really easy to get out to an apple store and drop 6 bills on an iPad, but I want to look around and evaluate my options, cause I'm a value guy. Before I start looking I want to get some opinions from you cats on what I should be looking for, value-wise and quality-wise. I have a working list of possibilities going so drop some names and knowledge and it would really jump start my search. FYI My price range is 400-600

I don't understand tablet craze at all. How can you do "functional, highly practical purposes" without a keyboard.
But I have a smartphone and eInk bookreader so they cover most possible tablet uses. And I have Mac allergy

You can get a keyboard for 80$ i believe. But it also has a touch keypad. I know i want one, i work in my car daily and have to do a lot of notes, reports and it would be great for me. I guess it just depends on what you buy it for. Tablets aren't for everyone.

I recently ditched my iphone for an Android phone and I am loving it. I am looking at Android tablets. Mainly just to be cool. Anyone have one of those?

I know someone who ditched her BB for an Android and she's had nothing but problems with it. If i didn't have a BB i'd go with the iphone.

These tablets are missing too many features and update too damn fast. With a laptop, you get the complete package and it will do the same stuff a newer laptop would. The tech lasts longer than the iPad. If you don't have a laptop left, you need to go get one. IPad isn't practical for work

Considering how many phones made by how many manufacturers out there run the Android platform that's like saying my friend bought an import car and has had nothing but problems with it LOL

Android will take over Apple in the phone/tablet market in short order because it's open source and multiplatform. Iphones and Ipads are cool devices, but you have way more freedom and therefore power with Android.

My wife has a mid-level LG phone running Android and it's relatively stable, but she has issues. I have a high-end Sony Ericsson and mine is a beast. I am running a dualboot Android 2.1/2.2 platform with an overclocked CPU and it's the coolest device ever. YOu'll never be able to do that with Apple.

To the OP. Tablets are toys really. They are smart phones with bigger screens..and as you said, sexy for things like presentations to business clients, but dollar for dollar go with a laptop. They are more powerful and as mentioned will have a longer lifespan. It's really comparing apples to fruitbaskets' if you pardon the pun.

thinking of getting a tablet for school also for days I don't need the laptop, leaning towards the Ipad 2 but heard good things about the Playbook too.

You know, you can still get Tab by the case.

In this order:

Samsung Tab

BB tab (playbook)

Ipad (fuck apple)

I personally own a galaxy tab and love it I will NEVER buy anything apple again, so I can't offer any personal opinion on it as it would be biased.

Also Jeff your friend likely fucked it up or doesn't know how to use it, androids are the best thing to get if you're planning to own a cell phone unless its a company thing then its blackberry, but only for buisnesses.

To best honest bro, your best choice may be a netbook. I know people who have iPads, Playbooks, normal Laptops, but no one claims to get more value for their money like netbook owners do. Screens are kind of small at around 10" but it's really a mini laptop and has all the features a normal desktop/laptop includes. Only thing it is missing is a CD/DVD drive but obviously iPads don't have those either. Netbooks are really cheap and reliable and that's what I'd recommend.
