hey people a couple of more questions as i get closer to making the purchase:

1. Are macbooks easy / straightforward to upgrade later down the road (buy more memory)?

2. if my disc drive burns out or fails after a couple years, can i replace it easily?

3. Is it prefered to buy one from the Apple store over other chain stores (i.e. better service for problems)?

I can only answer #3 ... when we got our MacBooks last year, we were originally going to get ours from Future Shop; however, my brother-in-law recommended getting them from the Apple Store, along with the AppleCare package. He said (and I paraphrase) that, from his experience, you get much better care and service when going through the Apple Store compared to going through Future Shop or Best Buy. He would also recommend getting the extended warranty (we ended up getting our laptops from the Apple Store along with the extended warranty ... no problems yet, but I will be going back there to spruce up my Pro once the battery life goes down to about 7 hours).

1) Depends on what you think is easy. Can you do it yourself? Not really unless you have the special tools. Can apple easily do it for you? Yes. See note below.

2) Why should you replace it? Buy Apple Care and make them replace it for you. It's worth buying Apple Care because it can be used for almost anything.

3) Apple Store for me. I can cash in on student discounts easily there. In hindsight, I don't know if this matters.

Note:

You don't buy a macbook for specifications. If you are just looking for specifications then you should get a PC. The point is, go play with a mac right now. If you're not going to game with it, I don't see why you'd worry about memory in the future. The macs already run a simpler OS than PCs which makes run smoother and more efficient. You can upgrade to an 8 GB ram from 4 GB and Apple will do it for you if you pay (look into the cost). I know one person who did that but he uses his mac to run OSx, and Windows while he monitors servers and does design work. He doesn't even reach the limit for the 4GB ram, but obviously having more will make this system run better.

It depends on which one you have ... the 13" battery lasts for 10 hours, while the 15" and 17" batteries last for 8-9 hours.

The best answer to your question is here:

Apple - Support - Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard Time Machine

It explains it the best.

lol think is I've been a die hard Windows guy since day 1 too...thought Macs were useless till last year when my English teacher bought a Macbook Pro and then showed us some of the cool features it had. Apple just does the little things so well, really makes a difference.

My GF's sister is getting one of these Apple Mod Books. Looks great if you ask me. Probably my next computer.

Give it a couple of days and you'll figure it out ... it took my husband 3-4 days and me a week (sue me, I'm not a computer person).

I would actually advise going to the Apple website and going through their Switch 101 and Mac 101 tutorials ... it really helps!
