Default Theft under $5000 first offense

So me and my boy were drunk last night and decided to steal bottles from a club. Bad choice because I got caught with 4 bottles and cops were called. Cop told me that this wouldn't be on my record and that I probably wouldn't need a lawyer when I go to court because he said I was "well educated". What are you guys' thoughts on this because I don't know what to expect.

It is a criminal offense so it will go on your record, don't know what the cop was thinking. How well educated you are doesn't mean squat except that you probably should have know better.

Cop wants to own you. Saying you don't need a lawyer so you screw yourself over more, imo. Why wouldn't you need a lawyer? Aren't you getting charged? Cops are tricky, making you think you don't need a lawyer 'cause you're "well-educated" but clearly you're not well-educated in law so yeah. Don't see why it wouldn't be on your record either.

btw stealing bottles from a club aint really "ballin", smh

Never believe the cops. In this kind of situation, always ask the most educated adult you know what to do.

If that educated adult tells you to get a lawyer(recommended) and you dont have the money for it, both you and your friends should get a really good believeable story together.

And then pray.

But I'd recommend the lawyer route. The cop lied.

Just never talk to cops unless you are being detained and only do so once your lawyer is there. There is no benefit to telling them anything. They are there to catch you so the court can process you. They have ZERO impact on your sentencing unless they decide not to charge you.

They lie all the time to get you to confess...It's not illegal for them to do that.

If you get caught like that in a club again, just leave...They aren't allowed to detain you even if you have committed a crime unless they place you under "citizens arrest"...Which these days, any good lawyer can get a case thrown out for.

If charges were pressed your getting a criminal record. Right now, what I'd do is call a criminal lawyer asap. Theft under $5000 is pretty serious.

Right now, what works towards your benefit is if you've never gotten into trouble before.

But trust me, get a lawyer asap.

You better start trying to look as pretty as possible.

It'll go a long way when you're someone's bitch.

you need a lawyer cause whatever sentence you get sticks and you can't get a retrial if you represent yourself. Thats how it works in the U.S., don't know if its the same in Canada

did the club owner have to press charges?
if the bottles stolen were low in value its stupid on the clubs part to spend money on lawyers. Settle the case out of court with some sort of cash compensation or something of that nature. show them they'll be saving money settling out of court
