anyone play this? a childhood obsession has been reborn in me. a buddy of mine joined a city-wide league, and i've been playing randomly with him every once in a while. i played a fair number of rpg's as a kid (back when 'rpg' didn't have a necessary 'mmo' in front of it), but this was the only sports one that seemed to work. and i loved it. and apparently i still do.

anyone?

Never even heard of it. :)

jeffb 08-11-2011 12:11 PM

yeah me either

'trane 08-11-2011 12:13 PM

it is also colloquially referred to as 'geek-ball'. it's perfect for me...

My buddy had a James Bond RPG, but I think we only played it once.

my cousin used to play that game obsessively back in the 80's.
he tried to get me into it, but i would rather just play his commodore 64 instead.

What, no datasette? 50 bytes per second, baby!

I think i may have had it. Do some versions come with paper inserts of every stadium from the majors? I had some weird game with that feature that my old man picked up on a garage sale.

'trane 08-11-2011 02:27 PM

yeah, each stadium has variables that impact homeruns and singles. it also depends on what level of sophistication you want to play. as there is d&d and advanced d&d, there is also strat and advanced strat. you can layer extra variables and increase the complexity.

fancylad 08-11-2011 02:31 PM

cool. Obviously i didn't play it very much as i can barely remember owning it in the first place, but i reckon if i were to try it out now, i would be all over it.

'trane 08-11-2011 02:33 PM

it's good times. my buddy picked up the hall of fame edition and the historical stars cards, so the teams are all amazing players from history. fun to match 'em all up and simulate the games over a couple of pints.

XiaominWu 08-11-2011 02:42 PM

I played Strat-o-Matic once or twice, but was much more a fan of Pursue the Pennant..... same idea, but they took it up a couple notched with the level of complexity.

I was obsessed with it for a couple of summers. They converted it into an online/PC version, but you really lose the feel when you can't hold it in your hands.

So much fun if you are a stats geek.

I'm fairly certain I have never seen this in my life, although, I guarantee I was out playing ball while kids were in playing this game.
