I love the stuff that Ed's Real Scoop makes. Sounds exciting.

I got some books - 1q84 and some David Foster Wallace, and some Mary McLeod shortbread.

Well my gf might buy me league pass if the site would stop crashing haha

Question that hopefully someone can answer: If I get NBALP I know I am blocked out from Raptors games in canada.

If I VPN to the states (or other) can I watch the local games?

a new 50mm lens and MB-D80 battery grip for my Nikon. That's it... not as many gifts as some of you guys but I'm still very thankful because I didn't even ask for anything.

Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays!

Not sure where you stand on the whole Christmas thing, but I take it that you do stuff for the kids (any Santa in there?), but don't exchange gifts for yourself?

for the most part, yes. we celebrate family, eat a lot, exchange bottles of wine and books and have fun with the kids. there is a santa myth involved, but the kids are 2.5 and 7 months, so anything else is a bit too abstract and complicated for them.

tough to remove gift-giving (for any generation) from the grandparents.

you?

In the middle of a very difficult extraction process. I haven't really celebrated Christmas in a few years, and I started putting an end to the gift exchange last year (for ethical reasons, mostly). Slightly more people agreed this year than they did last, and more of the people who simply had to give a gift did it as a donation to a charity, which was a positive change. Alas, winning hearts and minds is not as easy as I'd like.

Yep, and the Pale King, as well as the Murakami who I've never read but look forward to giving a whirl to.

We've also been working to do away with the gifts. We managed to reduce pretty well this year. It's paying off, and the sentiments seem to be changing in general out there.

we flew to the west coast this year to spend the vacation with part of the family, and we asked for few kid gifts and no adult gifts - partly to reduce materialism, and partly for the very pragmatic fact of flying home with parcels. there is currently a very large mound of plastic and clothing nonsense in our room, and we are trying to figure out how to ship it home.

extraction process, indeed.
