Default Shaqs book about Kobe

SPOILER ALERT

I'm currently reading Shaqs book and some of this stuff is pretty funny.

So I'll share this with you guys.

Quote:
When the 97-98 season began Kobe was starting to get comfortable in the league. He started doing too much and taking everyone else out of their rhythm. I told him, "Hey, you've got to play team ball," and he always had an answer back. Anything you told him or suggested to him, he always had a comeback. I don't think he ever said, "Yeah, sure, thanks. That's a good idea."

Rambis had made Kobe the golden child, so everyone was afraid to question the kid. I wasn't afraid of anyone. I was going to say what was on my mind whether people liked it or not.

We were in Sacramento and we were losing, so we called a team meeting. No coaches, just players. Every time Kobe started with his one-on-one nonsense, we were tired of hearing "He's just a kid let it go." Guys were saying stuff under their breath about him, and that's never good.
This ones pretty funny

Quote:
We use to rap on the bus all the time. We'd freestyle. We'd see something and go off. It could be anything -a guy with a big nose walking his dog, a guy on our team with a zit on his cheek. Kobe wouldn't usually say anything, but he was sitting there observing . You could tell he wanted to join in, but he hung back. Maybe he was afraid he wasn't a good enough rapper. Who knows? We spent a lot of time wondering what was going on under that retro afro he had.

Kobe was a very intelligent guy. One day we're on the bus rapping and he starts in with his own rap. He's using all these big words, and the damn rap sounds like a movie script or something. That was when we realized he was going home and writing stuff up, then memorizing it and coming back with it on the bus.

He would pretend to be freestyling, but he'd throw all his metaphysical and metabolical stuff in there, so we'd call him on it. We'd tell him, "That ain't no freestyle," and he's get all defensive and say, "Yes it is. Yes it is. It's off the dome. It's off the dome." We'd all just laugh and say, "Okay, brother."
Quote:
In the early 99-00 season we he had players-only meeting and everyone started to go off on Kobe. Next thing you know the coaches come busting in and stick up for the Kobester, saying, "C'mon, now. This isn't all on Kobe. Lets not turn this into a witch hunt." DFish interrupts Phil and says, "Hold on, Phil, your new here. We've been putting up with this for four years. It's time to get to the bottom of it."

The weird thing about that meeting was Kobe was sitting in the back of the room saying, "I love you guys." Only he wasn't saying it like that. He went into this street talk, saying, "Y'all my niggas, y'all like brothers to me." I was looking at him and wondering, What the hell is this? Maybe he was trying to fit in. After all, the kid was 21 years old. But if he wanted to fit in, he should have taken off his headphones once in a while and tried to talk to us.

Doesn't surprise me he was a loner. The only thing he cares about is himself...

And this is why those ads fail miserably. You can't be so utterly fake, and then put on a humorously put-on persona.

I was a little taken aback by the description of metabolical references though. Would talking about how one's ass taste be considered metabolic in nature? Strange choice of words. I'm not even sure it is a word actually.

Is this from "Shaq Uncut"? My local library has some copies. It sounds like it might be fun to read.

The Spurs won because of Tim Duncan, a guy I could never break. I could talk trash to Patrick Ewing, get in David Robinson’s face, get a rise out of Alonzo Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and then say, “Hey, Shaq, watch this shot right here off the glass.”

You gotta love that. I used to say Duncan and I were like two mafia bosses. I was the loud East Coast boss, taking names, knocking heads. Tim was the laid-back, one-hundred-acre farm don. Nobody knows what he does, he’s the chill mafia guy, but we both know how to carry out a hit. I was jealous of guys like Duncan and Kevin Garnett, who got to do stuff like face up and shimmy

It's quite a short book. Took me only a 4-5 days to get through half of it.

Shaq: So I'm on edge because I don't have a new deal, and Kobe is on edge because he might be going to jail, so we're taking it out on each other. Just before the start of the '03-'04 season the coaching staff called us in and said, "No more public sparring or you'll get fined." ... Phil was tired of it. Karl Malone and Gary Payton were sick of it. ... So what happens? Immediately after that Kobe runs right out to Jim Gray and does this interview where he lets me have it. He said I was fat and out of shape. He said I was milking my toe injury for more time off, and the injury wasn't even that serious. (Yeah, right. It only ended my damn career.) He said I was "lobbying for a contract extension when we have two Hall of Famers playing pretty much for free." I'm sitting there watching this interview and I'm gonna explode. Hours earlier we had just promised our coach we'd stop. It was a truce broken. I let the guys know, "I'm going to kill him."

Kobe stands up and goes face-to-face with me and says, "You always said you're my big brother, you'd do anything for me, and then this Colorado thing happens and you never even called me." I did call him. ... So here we are now, and we find out he really was hurt that we didn't stand behind him. That was something new. I didn't think he gave a rat's ass about us either way. "Well, I thought you'd publicly support me, at least," Kobe said. "You're supposed to be my friend."

Brian Shaw chimed in with "Kobe, why would you think that? Shaq had all these parties and you never showed up for any of them. We invited you to dinner on the road and you didn't come. Shaq invited you to his wedding and you weren't there. Then you got married and didn't invite any of us. And now you are in the middle of this problem, this sensitive situation, and now you want all of us to step up for you. We don't even know you." ...Everyone was starting to calm down when I told Kobe, "If you ever say anything like what you said to Jim Gray ever again, I will kill you."
Not sure if thats from the book or not, just found it online

Shaq was always the badass in that feud. Say what you want, he'd kill Kobe quick.

That stuff about Duncan was hilarious.

The stuff about Kobe never showing up to any team-related functions isn't surprising. I'm almost completely convinced that the kid sold his soul to the devil at a young age for Jordan-like talent.
