Default Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame debate

Quote:
Of course, many "serious" rock fans are objecting to the inclusion of facepainted rock 'n' roll clowns Kiss--who have always been despised by music critics, whose musical skills have always been rudimentary at best, and who are better known for spitting blood and marketing themselves on lunchboxes than for their actual musical output at this point. But the rock titans' influence on stadium-rock culture, rock merchandising, and an entire generation of headbangers cannot be denied...and c'mon, who DOESN'T want to see Gene and Paul perform an allstar, special-guest-laden version of "Rock 'N' Roll All Night" at the 2010 induction ceremony, complete with pyro?
Quote:
Other naysayers claim that disco-peddling possible Rock Hall inductees Abba and Donna Summer do not ROCK, pe se, but we here at That's Really Week beg to differ--Abba in particular rock pretty hard in their own shiny happy way, and their Hall Of Fame appearance might be the closest thing to a hoped-for Abba reunion that fans will ever witness. Plus Madonna, who sampled Abba in "Hung Up," is already in the Hall, so why not induct the original pop source, huh?
Quote:
And as for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, sure, they spawned a generation of cargo-shorts'd, shirtless rap-rockers...but is that an accomplishment that deserves to be rewarded, really, rather than punished? Is there a Rock And Roll Of Shame that the Peppers can join instead?
Quote:
And finally, possibly the most controversial HoF nominee this year is veteran rapper LL Cool J. Some old-fashioned fuddy-duddies think rap does not belong in the ROCK Hall, but they just sound like grouchy Noel Gallagher griping about Jay-Z playing the Glastonbury Festival. There's no denial at this juncture in music history that rap and rock have combined forces (note the RHCP mention in the above paragraph, for better or worse), and if Grandmaster Flash and last year's inductees Run-DMC can get in, then so should LL, we say. After all, LL is pretty much the only MC of the '80s era who still has a flourishing and relevant career today, without having to star in a VH1 dating show.
Sept. 21-27: Hall Of Fame Controversy, One Day At A Time - That's Really Week

who belongs in the hall and should artists from music genres other than Rock be included?

they've sold more albums than anyone on the list except ABBA

Quote:
Chicago was the leading U.S. singles charting group during the 1970s. They have sold over 120 million albums worldwide, scoring 22 Gold, 18 Platinum, and 8 Multi-Platinum albums. Over the course of their career they have charted five No. 1 albums, and have had twenty-one top ten hits
Im surprised ABBA sold 370 million records

Rappers - Please Die

RHC - YES - Belittles them to say they are fashion band. Unique sound that others copied.

Kiss - yes, wasn't a fan, but I think they deserve to be there if nothing else than for their longevity.

ABBA - yes

Donna Summers - probably, again not a fan of hers, but their are plenty who are.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - no, I actually like some of their music, but I don't think they have done enough for HOF status, yet.

L.L. Cool J.- hell no, rap is not rock n roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing put out in the last 30+ years is Rock n Roll. That genre is dead. In fact none of those artists are in that out dated category.

Example- Madonna (already there) isn't rock n roll

-MJ (already there) wasn't rock n roll
-Janet Jackson (eligible next year) will get in and isn't rock n roll

Here's a recent list of some more recent honourees:

REM
Grandmaster Flash
Van Halen
Blondie
U2
The Police
Talking Heads
Tom Petty
Bee Gees
Gladys Knight
AC/DC
Miles Davis
The Ronettes
Black sabath
The Ventures
The Dave Clark 5
Leonard Cohen

Are any of them Rock n Roll? It should simply be the Music Hall of Fame.

Rock 'n' Roll is dead.

It was cool that Wanda Jackson made it last year though.

A lot of them do. It's in their "Look at me!" nature.

They have to pay out around 30 grand for the honour.

I didn't know they did it for the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, but they also do that to get a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
