Default A riddle...

three people eat at a restaurant. the meal costs them 30 dollars total. each of them pays $10. The waiter takes their bill, but upon further observation, the manager realizes that there was a mistake, and it only costs a total of 25 dollars, and gives the waiter 5 dollars to give back to the customers. The waiter, being a sneaky fellow, pockets 2 dollars. He gives the remaining 3 dollars to the customers.

Now here's the tricky part.

They each get one dollar back, so the total they each pay is $9, right? 9 multiplied by 3=27.

add the waiter's pocketed $2, and you have $29.

where did the $1 go?

it fell on the ground.

i don't know man.... i could probably figure it out, but i got work to do!

BTW... that's pretty cheap for a restaurant in Europe if we're talking Canadian dollars. Did that include the cost of drinks? Would you recommend this restaurant, Belsius?

I've heard it before, there is no missing dollar, its all in the wording, but it still pretty messed up till your brain manages to wrap its head around it.

25+3=28
28+2(waiters)=30

See my previous post.

Math needs to be calculated forwards not backwards, meaning that the $25 cost, pluss the $3 given back, plus the $2 kept by the waiter equally $30.

yeah, but we are talking from the stand point that if each of them spent 9 euros and you add the 2 euros the waiter kept you get 29.

You have to follow the what the riddle says

I did, thats the answer. You cannot get the answer by calculating it the way it is worded.

You can work it the other way and compare the differences.

3 guys each paid 9 dollars=$27

Cost of room is $25

Waiter kept $2

$27 paid = 25$ + $2

There is always an answer and I gave it.

27-2=25

25+2+3=30

I'll obviously agree on how it has to do with wording

The trick is in the second last line, the "add the waiter's $2 and you get 29". Our minds tell us to add it onto the 27, but in reality because that $2 would be going towards relieving the customer's cost, we should take it off so they only pay $25.
