Add Gallipoli to that. Though it's as much an anti-war movie. It is a great illustration of how horrifyingly stupid WWI was, in all of it's cold-blooded reason and realpolitik. I think we all still suffer the consequences from that whole affair today. There may be no untangling of the messy threads that resulted, and in this depiction we see just how unnecessary it all was. A gut wrenching movie with a very young Mel. I highly recommend.

In a similar vein, i would suggest Night of the Shooting Stars, an Italian film also from the 80ís.

Saw Interstellar last week in IMAX. Had a really weird experience. A couple behind me fell asleep 20 minutes in and snored the entire time. I confronted them twice and they were super dismissive. I went to find an usher to no avail, so just dealt with it.

I found the movie fascinating, especially Nolan using interviews from Ken Burns' documentary 'The Dust Bowl' (which a lot of scientists are predicting to return quite soon). This was a nice, unexpected and affective way to situate the science fiction of this film in the here and now.

Nolan talks about it at around the 4:30 mark here:

Thanks gents. Downloading now.

What amazes me about WW1 is how eager everyone was to go to war. I loved that scene in War Horse when the very proud stoic horse riding soldiers ride with their swords drawn and get mowed down by machine gun fire. That to me is the essence of WW1.

Finally got to watch Redirected
My rating 8.6 Great movie, with tons of action, randomness and dark humor.

Nudity Warning!

How to Train Your Dragon 2

what... c'mon now, I liked the first one. This new one... not as good. Not bad, but a couple real cheesy musical parts killed it for me. Made the whole thing feel like just another Pixar movie for little kids.

I grade it a C-

Not We were Soldiers. That movie is just plain turrible. All Mel Gibson does is yack on the battle phone while guys are dropping all around him. Very strangely produced action scenes in that war movie.

My nephew wanted to see The Gambler. Mark Walberg. Made by the people that made The Departed.

Holy what a bunch of crap! Americans sure are taken by losers that have a quick lip and attitude. Walbergs character basically is a crappy gambler, a terrible bully of a teacher and a shit of a person. But when he loses he has something witty to say! So lets loan him all the money he wants!!

Favorite scene is he gets all the $$ he needs to get him out of trouble...but gambles it away...and that now he's really screwed!!..but gosh darn doesn't that turn on the 19 yo student and he bangs her!! What am I missing?

I'd be very curious to hear others opinion. Maybe there was some deep intellectual flow that I was missing. Maybe the layers of a complex character are so deep, I don't have the education to understand.

Or maybe its just another loser jackoff that can string a sentence together and that freezes the room!?

2/10 ..would have been 4/10 if they showed the sex scene.

The Interview

OMG. Of course you think it's going to be insulting and vulgar. Multiply your expectations by 10 and you have this movie.

Gotta say, if I was Kim Jong-un, I'd nuke the USA too after watching it.

It had some laughs. The leads didn't rif all movie like their other flicks. Lets give it a 5/10.:cookie:

Alien Nation (1988)

Good movie. They skip most the sci-fi stuff and it ends up being a basic 80's cop action movie with a twist. But they did a good job with this picture, good acting. Short movie, only 90 minutes.

No, I never did watch the TV series they made after this movie.

I give it a B-

Just watched The Imitation Games couple hours ago, it was incredibly impressive and intriguing!! Benedict Cumberbatch did a Oscar worthy performance and the supporting lead was great. A great biopic about a mathematician great of the 20th century that had a huge, huge impact on the world and humanity today. And it was well done!

Easily my top 10 films of 2014 that would be a top 5 protected...lol :mu:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes II: Apes Gone Wild

While the animation for the Apes is very very good, this movie has a few major flaws. My main issue was the main human guy (who was a terribly scripted actor that almost completely drains this film) was just chilling point blank range when William Defoe *spoiler alert* detonates like 1,000 lbs of C4 explosive. Of course, the actor walks away without a scratch. Very unwittingly produced dialogue scenes. Too many cut scenes of different blabby or happy conversations take away from tense moments. Continuity issues, and lacking descriptive plot scenes. All the Humans just live in a big pile? It looked like a crowded market at Burning Man or something?

This movie gets a D for dumb.

Too bad, amazing work they did with the apes, very realistic.
