i finally watched Fear and Loathing in las vegas.

I liked it... pretty good adaptation from the book. It's probably a good thing i watched it alone as my wife would have found the whole thing repulsive. Lots of repulsion in that movie. Benicio del toro's character especially so.

I watched West of Memphis, which is something of an overview of what the Paradise Lost documentaries concerning the West Memphis 3 presented. It doesn't get lost in the details as the earlier docs were apt to, but it still does offer plenty of poignant human touches on the whole travesty while giving a nice long view of the whole thing.

And I saw The Central Park Five on the PBS website.

Both docs are striking in hearkening back to how easy hysteria was whipped up by the media in the late 80's. They both take me back, and not in a good way. And what remains in the wake of tremendous injustice, is the politics that refuses to be held to account. People made political gains within a very politicized judicial system, by disregarding facts, evidence, truth, and in so doing destroyed lives and allowed the real perpetrators to carry out further crimes.

Both stories involved building cases on confessions after breaking down kids through hours and hours and hours of interrogations and feeding them necessary details. Even so, the evidence does not match up. But someone confessing is pretty insurmountable, and we give far too much credence to those in authority to be able to question how the confessions came about, especially when the media is given free reign to whip up hysteria. The idea of justice, of society being served by people working to keep us safer, just ends up being as much of a fiction as these confessions.

Go from the 20-25 years ago to now, and we can see the whole process exported to black sites and gitmos and the effects exploded many times over, again with no accountability by those in power who willfully disregard the truth, to protect themselves and eventually down the line, by those who just want to protect the fiction. The West Memphis 3 were finally freed, with the burden of evidence just proving insurmountable, but the freedom came only after they admitted guilt, as though the truth was just something that could not be acknowledged and the fiction was something that simply had to be preserved. That is the hold of power and privelege on our lives. If only Shakespeare could have a go at shit like this.

Django Unchained

A little long but i enjoyed it. Christoph Waltz was the best part of this movie, as he was in Inglorious Bastards.

MAMA 9/10

One of the best horror movies I've ever seen with an emotional end.

Watched Jack Reacher last night.

I expect to like Tom Cruise movies because he use to be in that category of "Dont have to make films for $$".

This was an attempt to start another Bourne franchise. But alas, poor Tom doesnt have the acting chops to be mysterious. He just comes off as creepy. Action sequences and fight scenes were laughable.

I haven't seen Jack Reacher but the movie made over $200 million worldwide on a relatively small budget. A sequel is being made.

Wow. Interesting. Watch it and let me know if that is justified.

Agree with every single thing you said.

His attempts at being mysterious and clever are hilariously cheesy.

Couldnt disagree more, it was a fun movie, and it was meant to be that way.

I liked it.

I already wrote about this once in this thread, but a coupla weeks ago, I went and saw Jurassic Park (again), my favourite movie in IMAX. It was absolutely amazing (again), watching an old movie in a new light.

If it's still out somewhere in ONT in IMAX, you should go see it.
