This weekend, I also watched a movie called Barney's Version. It's a Canadian film from 2010. Great hollywood level cast, and solid acting. Those of you who can enjoy low budget films might want to check this out.
I watched most of it on CBC a few months ago. From what I saw it was a pretty solid film. It just didn't do too well at all at the box office.

I have a buddy , who I consider an intelligent dude, say that he went to Spiderman twice and cried both times. Sad.

I have put a STOP on seeing all comicbook movies. Not only are they making every comic book ever written, they are redoing them over and over again. "Reboot" "Reformat" "Redux" just means "take your money a second time".

Who's with me!!!

Saw Savages, should have just slept through it.
Only a few good 2-5 minute time frames in a 2 hour 20 minute film.

Wanted to see Ted or Spiderman instead, got veto'd, then got apologised to afterwards LOL

I've never been a big fan of comic book movies. Well, i've never been into comic books period. The only series i've liked is the Christian Bale batman movies and the first Ironman movie. Beyond that it all gets a little ridiculous imo.

I just don't understand why they do the same ones over and over again, just with different actors.

mostly due to licensing...not sure of the details but years ago Sony, Fox, New Line and Lionsgate bought the rights to certain Marvel characters...and in order to keep those rights they have to produce something every 3,4,5 years (not sure of the number)..if they don't, the rights revert back to Marvel

here's a breakdown of what i mean...

Quote:
20th Century Fox

Daredevil: Daredevil/Matt Murdock, Elektra (Natchios), The Kingpin/Wilson Fisk, Bullseye, Jack Murdock, Karen Page, Ben Urich
Elektra: Christine Cord/Tatoo, Typhoid Mary/Marry Alice Walker, Kirigi, Stick, Stone
Fantastic Four: Doctor Doom/Victor von Doom, Human Torch/Johnny Storm, Invisible Woman/Susan Storm, Mr. Fantastic/Dr. Reed Richards, The Thing/Ben Grimm, Nova/Frankie Raye, Alicia Masters, Willie Lumpkin
X-Men Mutants: [Agent Zero/Maverick/David North], Angel/Warren Worthington III, Arclight/Phillippa Sontag, Beast/Dr. Henry Phillip “Hank” McCoy, [Blob/Frederick J. Dukes], [Bolt/Christopher Bradley], Callisto, Colossus/Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin, Cyclops/Scott Summers, [Deadpool/Wade Wilson], Emma (Grace) Frost, Jean Grey/Phoenix, Juggernaut/Cain Marko, Gambit/Remy LeBeau, Glob Herman/Herman Gardner, Iceman/Bobby Drake, Jubilee/Jubilation Lee, Katherine “Kitty” Anne Pryde, [Kestrel/John Wraith], Lady Deathstrike/Yuriko Oyama, Leech, Magneto/Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, Mastermind/Jason (Wyngarde), Multiple Man/James Arthur Madrox, Mystique/Raven Darkholme, Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner, Phat/William Robert “Billy-Bob” Reilly, Professor Charles Xavier, Psylocke/Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock, Pyro/St. John Allerdyce, Quill/Max Jordan, Rogue/(Anna) Marie, Sabretooth/Victor Creed, Sebastian Hiram Shaw, [Silver Fox], Siryn/Theresa Rourke Cassidy, (The) Spike, Storm/Ororo Munroe, Wolverine/Logan
X-Men Non-Mutants: Drake Family (Steven, Madeline, Ronny), Grey Family (Dr. John, Elaine), Henry Peter Gyrich, Robert Edward Kelly, Dr. Moira Kinross MacTaggert, Dr. Kavita Rao, William Stryker, Bolivar Trask, Warren Worthington II

New Line Cinema

Vampires: Blade, Deacon Frost, Dracula/Vlad Tepes
Non-Vampires: Hannibal King, Abraham Whistler [UPDATE: Since the time of writing this, The Blade rights have been transferred back into Marvel's hands.]

Sony Pictures

Ghost Rider: Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze, Blackheart/Legion, Phantom Rider/Carter Slade, Abigor, Gressil, Mephistopheles, Wallow, Barton Blaze, Roxanne Simpson
Spider-Man: Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Doctor Octopus/Otto Octavius, Green Goblin/Norman Osborn, (New) Green Goblin/Harry Osborn, [The Lizard]/Dr. Curt Connors, Sandman/Flint Marko, Venom/Eddie Brock Jr., Betty Brant, Dennis Carradine (Buglar), J. Jonah Jameson, Ben Parker, May Parker, John Jameson, Joseph “Robbie” Robertson, Gwen Stacy, Mendel Stromm, Flash Thompson

Lionsgate Entertainment

Punisher: The Punisher/Frank Castle, Jigsaw/Billy Russoti, Microchip/Linus Liberman, Joan the Mouse, Maginty, Mr. Bumpo, Spacker Dave, The Russian, Maria Elizabeth Castle, Detective Martin Soap [UPDATE: Since the time of writing this, The Punisher rights have been transferred back into Marvel's hands.]
so what you get is a lot of "reboots' with the same characters over and over again
and let's be honest here, a lot of shit/garbage on the screen because of it...although i must admit Sony did an excellent job with the recently released Amazing Spider-Man

Because people line up around the corner to see them!! I am aware that the buying public is the problem. I'm trying to enlighten whoever I can that that is why these films keep being made.

STOP GOING TO THEM!! Force Hollywood to get creative!!

Same here, dude. I never read comics as a kid, and I know fuck all about the storylines of most. But I love the Christian Bale Batman movies. I went to see Spiderman with several people. Same group I accompanied to Prometheus. Going in, they heard similar things to what I heard..."It's so awesome blah, blah" One person actually said Amazing Spiderman is to Spiderman what Batman Begins was to Batman movies. That made me go in with really high expectations. In that sense, I was dissapointed. It was still an entertaining movie, but it was not in the same league as Batman Begins.

have you read it? it really is a great book. one of my all-time favourites. i was very much excited when i heard they made a film. giamatti is a great choice. the movie is a bit weird because of the year it is set in, and the book makes more sense. it also goes a lot deeper into montreal as a city and as a cultural space for the plot. i highly recommend it. i thought it was a lot better than duddy kravitz.

No, I haven't read it. I don't read fiction unless forced to. I might make an exception for this book though, given your comments about Montreal. I'm also curious if the book would do a better job of convincing me that Barney really could land his third wife.

haha.

i forgot about your opposition to fiction. i did that for a while too, when i thought i should be learning more (not saying that is your reason, but it was mine). eventually i realized that i both learned more about myself and enjoyed myself a hell of a lot more by reading novels and short fiction. whatever floats your boat, of course.

richler has a great way of creating characters - both in terms of people and of locations. and barney reminds me of my dad - not in his vulnerabilities and anxieties, but they drink the same scotch and smoke the same cigars, and they complain of some of the same things as they got old. i think i connected to it this way.
