saw prometheus last night. stunning visually, but the writing was awful. i mean really bad dialogue and thin characters. it's a good entertaining movie, but nowhere near the kind of film that alien was. not sure if that is fair, but it is clearly true. alien had this great mix of exciting action, solid, well-rounded characters, a terrific plot, a fear factor... it was a full-bodied film, so to speak. prometheus was nowhere near that. the plot was too big and too thinly explored. it felt like a 2 hour opening scene to a big movie, and i guess with the upcoming sequels that's what it will be. but as a stand-along movie it was so shallow as to be humourous.

7/10 for the scenery and action alone.

the life of pi was a massively overrated book that will not likely be a good film. ang lee is pretty good at making a lot out of a few simple scenes, so maybe something has been found here, but i thought the book was boring as hell, and i can't see a film version being any more interesting.

in fact, all of the previews looked awful - total recall? yikes. abe lincoln vampire hunter - double yikes.

the one with denzel as a pilot could be interesting,. but the rest were cringe-worthy. simultaneously an entertaining and disappointing night at the theatre for me.

Based on a best selling novel. So it may be alright. In the same vein as pride and predjudice and zombies.

Anyone here as excited as me to see Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln?

Spielberg directed with what looks to be a solid cast.

Should be epic.

I don't go to the theatres for many non action movies but I think I'll be making an exception for this one

Flyboys

Good stuff right there. It was a little cheesy, but better then most the crap they put out there. I got Red Tails coming pretty soon. Just a little warm up I guess.

was surprised to see that Tobey Maguire is in the movie...directed by Ang Lee

the visuals on the short were pretty amazing

I read this book years ago and it was very good. Excited to see how it translates to the big screen. Not a big Maguire fan though. Ugh.

reviews of this book are firmly divided down the middle...most either hate it or really like it
i'm intrigued enough to pick it up and check it out for myself

oh and i agree about Maguire...a big meh for me
every time i see him i think i'm looking at KD Lang

edit...i've looked everywhere for the short that was at the theater..can't find it online...if anyone comes across it please post it...i'd like to see what it looks like in 2D

Heh-heh.... no sir... you are not. You're not the only one who sat through it though if that makes you feel any better.

I know you liked "Up in the Air" (Clooney) quite a bit SJ.... have you seen "The Descendants"? Another quality flick IMO.

I consider Flyboys to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to movies, but that was just awful.

I finally watched Big Lebowski the other day. I don't dig those boring intellectual artsy-fartsy movies. Meh... I'll give it a C+

Interesting. I'd never describe it as that.

Love Lebowski.

Fargo and The Big Lebowski were two of my favorite Coen Brothers films. I wouldnt say they were artsy.
But if your into MIchael Bay and things exploding. Then in comparison it is a little more cerebral.
