Saw The Dependants last night. Great to see a movie with zero special fx and a great story and acting.

Chronicle: 7.5/10 - Wanted to see this after I saw the trailers and it didn't disappoint. Pretty cool flick with some poignant scenes. Not just about the special effects (which were very cool)... some quality interaction between the characters that really made you care about them.

My buddy saw that movie and said it was pretty good because it wasn't as cheesy as you'd expect it to be.

John Carter
this movie has received mixed reviews so i didn't know what to expect going in...happy to say i really enjoyed it
the pacing was a bit uneven at times but the action and visuals were incredibly well done
pretty much all modern day sci-fi originated from this book (Princess of Mars) back in 1917..it's an engaging combination of Western/Star Wars/Flash Gordon

worth checking out...8/10

Saw it tonight. It was a visual spectacle, but the story borrowed too much from other movies.

Star Wars, Avatar come to mind. And many scenes just looked and felt very similar to other films.

Heck. They even had "Jedecks" as leaders.

6/10. Entertaining for my nephews and niece.

Tree of Life - 4/10

i appreciate what he was trying to accomplish, but the direction of this movie made it so hard to stay with it. if i didn't see it during the day, i would certainly have been asleep for most of it.

actually lol'd a number of times during the first half-hour, during those ridiculously long stretches of cosmic wonderment scenes. they could have cut 20 minutes from all that without losing any of the effect.

think you've got it backwards my friend...Star Wars, Avatar etc etc all got their ideas from John Carter...in fact all modern sci-fi has it's roots from this story (originated in 1917)

i think this is why the critics have been hard on the film
as i said before...it was a bit unevenly paced at times but overall i had a hell of a good time watching this film

Tree of Life was the best film of the last year. 11/10. Films like that should not be hacked for any reason. Although I don't see the point of watching something like that on DVD either.

I watched the Fall, by Tarsem Singh from 2006. He made the Cell (which I liked), and most recently the Immortals (which I can't find myself being interested in). He tends to be more about style than substance, but the style is pretty fantastic. And in this one there is some substance shining through with an amazing performance by a kid actor. It is set in silent era LA, and would make a nice triple-bill with the Artist and Hugo. Along with LA, there is a fantastical tale told to the kid that makes use of amazing locations all over the world, my favorite being Fatehpur Sikri. A solid 7.5.
