The Devil and Daniel Johnston. 8/10

While I think it's one hell of a compelling story, I don't understand why anyone thinks he's a "genius".

IMO his music is quite amusing, but not that good.

Comparing him to Bob Dylan and Bryan Wilson is ludicrous.

My girlfriend kept saying that it was like the Emperor's New Clothes.

I don't get it. Am I missing something?

No offense intended to anyone who is a fan of him.

City of God- 9.6/10. Didnt think I could sit through an online movie with subtitles without turning away, but I was wrong. Just an incredible movie.

Lakeview Terrace- 7.3/10. It was better than I thought itd be. Kept me interested and didnt turn out how I thought it would.

City if God is an absolute classic. simply amazing movie. Everyone that has seen it has said the same.

and thriller some of the best movies you'll ever see have subtitles so don't let them scare you off.

Speaking of subtitles, i rented Samurai Fiction over the weekend. Being a huge fan of Japanese samurai movies - especially older ones - I found this one amazing. 9.5 / 10. I gather it was a bit of an "homage" to the older movies of this genre. Very well done.

Also saw the Bank Job recently. 8/10. Pretty good movie. Reminded me a lot of Munich (which i also liked). Pretty cool insight to some of the darker events of 1960s/70s England.

Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansen........NICE.

Apocalypto was an awesome movie that was subtitled easily 9.5/10

Ill have to partially disagree, I dont remember much cause I saw it like 5 years ago, but I do remember that even though I though it was decent movie, I also though it was really overrated. Everyone says its a masterpiece, but I think its a pretty sensationalist movie with no argument.
It seemed like a pretty easy to do movie. Just put a lot of kids with guns that start a gangfight. No really any insight in it.

Just one of those easy "oh how sad" movies. Al least thats what I felt when I saw it movie. Maybe Im wrong, it was a long time ago.

i can see your point, but at the same time there is a lot more to it than "oh how sad". It's a depiction of life in one of the harshest, craziest neighbourhoods in the world. And the insane part is that's how life is really lived. All in all, i thought the story was quite good, the characters were well detailed and although brutal, there was a ton of substance behind the violence.

Like you, i saw it around 5 years ago.... i think i'll watch it again soon.

I've loved Daniel for a long time now. I wouldn't agree with the comparisons to anyone. I think what makes him memorable is his uniqueness. I think his songs do display a certain naive genius that captures some of the intense, personal beauty of music without any kind of pretense. On first listen he's just kinda freaky, and a laugh, but repeated listenings always give me a greater appreciation of his musical instincts and lyrical freedom.

Now have you checked out Jandek? There's a documentary about him. I've had some correspondence with the mystery man. I'm not quite sure what to make of him, but I did think that the doc about him, "Jandek on Corwood", is way too laden with the kind of critical pretensions that Daniel Johnson just continually stays out of the grasps of.

Passchendaele.

Thought this movie would be a little better (8.5 out of 10), but probably the best canadian movie ever made. Would have like a little more of the war in the movie, but wife says thats cause Im a "boy".

Paul Gross should win some serious awards for this movie, He wrote, Directed, Acted in and even wrote the song for the movie.....very impressive.

Well if you don't know...spielberg and will smith, yes both of them are planning on making a remake of this movie called Oldboy : http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008...erg-and-w.html

I watched the original (Korean version with subtitles) and i just gotta say this is probably one of the greatest revenge movies you'll ever see ...Death sentence left a bad taste in my mouth but Oldboy was just crzy...amazing direction, great screenplay, a lot of violence, etc....

My rating : 9/10

Also...watched Pineapple express last week...Rogen and Franco have good chemistry, a few laughs but the movie doesn't get it done

My rating : 6/10

Will Smith. What's the point? Just to help those that can't cope with subtitles? Oldboy is part of the vengeance trilogy. This works as a good reminder for me to download Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, both of which got nice reviews.

In other news - Salman Rushdie is supposedly working with Deepa Mehta on a script for a film version of his Midnight's Children, which she will direct. It's supposed to be out in 2010. The novel is my favorite piece of lit., but I simply can't imagine a film version. Those two together might just be able to pull it off though, and actually everyday in India resembles some of the magic realism, so it's a matter of capturing that the right way.

I saw Shenedoche, NY - Charlie Kaufman's latest madness. I loved it, but it does seem quite self-indulgent throughout. It eventually brings the pay-off of showing the need to shed all self-indulgence, which makes it the usual twisted brilliant stuff from Kaufman.

My favorite line - "Knowing that you don't know is the first important step towards knowing. You know?"

Yea I agree. I watched this movie today and it was awesome. I agree with the part of putting more war scence too. Overall it was fantastic. I wouldn't mind watching it again

watched the latest 007 flick tonight

non-stop action and not enough charm. i like how they made him more thuggish, but they're kind of missing the main element of what made james bond the worlds favourite secret agent.

good flick, though

casino royale had a better plot imo, but thats mostly because it was an introduction to bond. this one was bond maxing out his license to kill.
