I'm skeptical. lol

This movie will clean up at the razzies.

So in summation, The Expendables is awful. The acting is bad, the plot is childish, and the action is badly filmed. Save your money and go rent one of a thousand better action movies from the 80s. Or better yet, just spin in a circle until you are dizzy and then run until you fall over. Pretty much the same thing.
Quote:
Final notes: this is a movie in which Dolph Lundgren is expected to convincingly portray a junkie and have an American accent. Also, Jet Li plays a character called Yin Yang. Do with this information what you will.

We can understand the need to have a support group for elderly action heroes who want to relive the glory years. But did they have to release it as a film? Unnecessary.
Quote:
Let's be clear about a few things right up front. By many - if not most - critical standards, The Expendables is not a good film. If you're looking for character arcs, Oscar caliber performances, subtle writing and the like, you have come to the wrong place. Likewise, if you are expecting a comic parody of the period that produced Cobra and Commando, you've come to the wrong movie. If, however, what you want is a film that could easily have come from that era itself, then bingo! The Expendables is exactly the right ticket, a hugely entertaining - though slightly uneven - ride through the testosterone screen style of the past that avoids (almost) every urge to dip into nostalgia.

hahaha. Let's just say when it comes movies my tastes are pretty broad. I like films that make you think as much as the next guy. Akira Kurosawa is my favorite director and i can enjoy Antonioni, Bergman, and Fellini films immensly. At the same time sometimes i like to 'turn off', sit down and watch something that involves no thought whatsoever. Hence my love for bad action movies. They're great. Pretty much any Arnold film from the 80s, any JCVD one from the 90s, Action Jackson, Beverly Hills Cop, etc. That shit is pure entertainment. and if people liked those, then the Expendables is right up there. It's got everything those had and a little more too.

you're hilarious. and while i don't say LOL or use smiley icons that often, trust me i pretty much laugh at every one of your posts. Don't think for a moment this film was made with any kind of seriousness in mind. Part of the appeal of the whole thing is that it's completely unrealistic and a bit of a joke, but *newsflash* it's meant to be. Some people completely miss the point.

We saw True Grit on Saturday evening ... really enjoyed it. 8.5/10.

Also saw Never Let Me Go and Easy A on my laptop ... 7/10 for NLMG (loved the book, hated how the movie was dumbed down) and 8/10 for EA (just a fun movie).

just read this over at Rotten Tomatoes and wanted to pass it along...

#1 JAVIER BARDEM AND VIGGO MORTENSEN TOP THE ROLAND DESCHAIN WISH LIST FOR THE DARK TOWER

One of the biggest ongoing movie development stories of 2010 was the ambitious plans by Universal Pictures, Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment and NBC to adapt Stephen King's The Dark Tower series as both a trilogy of movies and a TV series. The new year gets started with the search for the actor to play the Gunslinger himself, Roland Deschain. At this point, Ron Howard is considering several actors for the role, with Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) reportedly at the top of the list, with Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings) a close second. Universal Pictures has scheduled the first movie in the new franchise for May 17, 2013.
Javier or Viggo ?...can't go wrong with either one imho

That's a big problem i have with movies... they're extremely over-hyped and I'm late to see them, I never think they're as wonderful as everyone else does. It's impossible to, when people love to oversell a movie as "cinematic genius", so you watch it and think it'll change your life as promised... but of course it doesn't. It's a good movie, a great movie, but it didn't meet expectations because it was so overhyped.

I need to start seeing movies before they get to that level.

Curiously, the exact same thing happends to me. Always always late to movies. With what Im hearing Im almost expecting True Grit to be the new Unforgiven (one of my favourite movies), wich is not a very realistic thing to happend. Hopefully its still pretty good.

true
I kept reading articles that mentioned True Grit being a top 5 movie of the year and probably came into the movie expecting too much

was reading about that the other day...also sounds like Sam Gamgee will be a part of it as well
i'm hoping they can sign McKellan for Gandalf again...they are only a couple of weeks away from shooting and there is no word from him yet

here's a link for a pretty big spoiler...it explains (sort of) how they will incorporate Frodo and Sam into the film...

I feel like I may have seen that one, years ago.

Is the new one as good as the original?
