Rap / Hip-Hop Appreciation Thread

There seems to be a pretty fair amount of hip-hop heads on this forum so instead of derailing basketball discussions to get in our two cents of music knowledge, why not talk about it here?

I'm not too hip to what's playing on the radio nowadays, I try to stick to the underground roots and the classics.

Anyways I'll kick everything off by throwing down my top five albums of all time, pick it apart as you wish:

1. Black Star - Talib Kweli / Mos Def
2. Illmatic - Nas
3. Ready to Die - Notorious B.I.G.
4. Paid in Full - Eric B. and Rakim
5. The Chronic - Dr. Dre

"The Low End Theory" - Tribe Called Quest & "3 Feet High & Rising" - De La Soul is all that any rap/hip hop fan needs.

Lil Wayne...

Okay, I've done my part.

'trane 07-29-2009 01:12 PM

that's a pretty good list, but i never liked biggie, so i wouldn't put him there... i know i'll get all the hate on this board for that, but i just don't like his style and i remain unconvinced that he was such a lyrical genius.

i think you need at least one de la album - maybe buhloone mindstate. i could also put common resurrection up there, but that might just be my taste. i love that you have paid in full there.

and criminal minded belongs there, without any hesitation.

if it's like this song, it's cool.

if it's about bitches, hoes, money, niggas this nigga that, guns and being a criminal, it can die away slowly.

1. A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
2. Run DMC - Raisin' Hell
3. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
4. PE - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
5. De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising

One of my favourite all-time tracks...

Biggie was far from a lyrical genius but his flow was incredible, and he could lace multiple rhymes together in sequence like no one I've ever listened to. I tend to believe he's one of the better story tellers to ever do it.

Resurrection is probably number 6 or 7 on my list. I Used to Love H.E.R. is and probably always will be my favourite song.
