If you "lose" your passport can you just get another one no questions asked?

Do not sell your passport and say you lost it. Bad idea.

Yeah they are worth a lot of money, Canadian ones are very valuable apparently.

If you get caught with that though I wouldn't be surprised if you get charged with treason. Seriously.

You can get several thousand for your passport. Especially if you're Sri Lankan because of the war that's goin on down there.

identity theft would be the first reason.

incarceration would be the second.

Those are very good reasons but they just dont seem likely to happen. I'm just wondering how someone would get a second passport after losing their first.

Lost or stolen
If a passport is lost or stolen, the bearer is required to report the circumstances of the loss or theft to Passport Canada and to the local police. If you are outside Canada, you must report the loss or theft to the nearest Canadian government office abroad and to the local police.

The request for a replacement passport can be made in Canada at any Passport Canada office or at the nearest Canadian government office abroad.

However, before the document can be replaced, Canadian authorities will conduct an investigation into the circumstances. This may lead to delays in processing the replacement passport.

A replacement passport, which may only be valid for a limited period, may be authorized if strict requirements are met. These include the submission of:

A completed application formsigned by your guarantor;
Two identical, up-to-date passport photos;
The appropriate fee;
Documentary proof of Canadian citizenship; and
A Statutory declaration concerning a lost, stolen, damaged, destroyed or inaccessible Canadian passport (PPTC 203, PDF, 34 KB).
Passport Canada: Traveller's corner - Lost, stolen, damaged, destroyed or inaccessible passport

they don't fuck around with this stuff.

and the identity theft piece, however unlikely, is a massive problem if it happens to you.

Quote:
A common form of character identity theft is the illegal take over of someone's passport. Although, passports are typically stolen, they could also be sold or given as a gift to a family member or a friend to help them out. In all cases, the purpose remains the same which is to allow for fake identification and travel to places where such passports are allowed to take their rightful owners. But especially, if they are stolen, passports could be used for acts of terrorism in the world. We take our passports for granted but it is a privilege to have the passport of a country especially if that country and its passport are well respected in the world. We must maintain the respect and trust of the country which granted us the privilege to own its passport and remember, that privilege can be taken away from us if we betray the trust.

Minor and professional alterations to the picture, name and other personal description in the passports make them appear as if they belong to the identity thieves. Some passports are more valuable than others and provide more access to places in the world and therefore are in high demand. If you ever lose your passport or have it stolen, make sure you take the appropriate actions to protect yourself. And, never ever sell or share it with others, because once you lose control of a piece of your identity, you might as well say good bye to your whole identity.

this is also worth checking out. it is a list of what you would likely have to go through if your identity was stolen. imo, that's not worth the risk for a few thousand bucks:

If you sell your passport you don't know who is getting it. If you do, it is LIKELY going to be used for criminal activity.... That could include a terrorist activity.

If you want to be partly responsible for the next 9/11 you disgust me.

After reading all that the only thing that seems difficult is the process of getting another one. Yeah they do a criminal investigation which is probably, "how did you lose it?" etc. The reason could be something simple like "I lost it at the airport, it could be in the Bahamas by now." The only possible trail for someone that wants to do this is if the actual people that run this give out the names.

Im not saying I'm selling my passport, I'm just wondering.

And Renihan, you're taking it to an extreme. I know what you're saying but passports are sold everyday. I have never seen this come back and bite someone in the ass or any terrorist attacks come from it. I dont know about other dudes, but from what I know they are used to move people in messed up countries (Sri Lanka)

of course it is an extreme but the fact is, it is a possibility and you have no idea what will happen once you sell it. Do you want to take the chance, small ad it might be?

Dude - Sri Lanka experiences more terrorist acts than just about any place on earth. And they have exported their terror to India, and I wouldn't be shocked if it comes here. If you want to live with that on your conscience then great.

And believe me - this will bite you in the ass in any case. My best friend works for immigration. The people that use this shit are usually scum that make a huge profit, and the people that will end up paying for your passport from a middleman that you sold it to, will be prone to panic and do something stupid. They usually try to discard the passport in the airplane washroom, but security officials will collect everything off of the plane.

And identity theft is a very big concern that could mess up your life permanently.
