Haven't been to either so I don't have an opinion.

But I guess they help some people

Yep. If I could afford it, I'd go see one.

It's covered if you get a referral from the doctor.

Depends on who you are and what you may need them for, been to both numerous times, and found them all to be completely and utterly useless. They never helped me with any of the problems i went to them for and never really did much at all in any way.

I went to one guy for about 8 sessions, once a week. And for those 8 appointments, I don't think he really even spoke the whole time, other than asking the standard questions they all do.

So through personal experience and my own opinion, I think they're a joke, and overpaid fools that you just get to vent to.

I have a friend that works here

Alternatives - The East York Mental Health Counselling Services Agency

An organization like that can be helpful. It's very much about the individual, and for too many individuals there is an over-reliance on iffy prognosis and using drugs. And the cost can be very rohibitive. A place that can refer you to resources that can be more fitting and/or accessible in the community might be a good place to start, or to fall back on if ordinary paths to treatment fail.

I have a friend who is a psychiatrist, hell just hangin out with her is good, I would imagine a session would be much better.

Life tangles us up, it's sometimes nice to have an intelligent and trained individual there to help sort it all out. A healthy mind is so, SO important.

Why doesn't she give you free sessions?

It depends. Some of them suit your situation, some won't.

I went to one a couple years back. I didn't love her, but there were helpful aspects to it. I'd go again, to someone who may be better suited to my situation.

For me, I have clinical depression and a severe anxiety disorder - I know full well that talking to a professional will not rid me of those things, they're there for good. But they CAN help to compartmentalize, and give you tools to deal with some symptoms.

In general, a lot of people don't have someone they can just talk to... say anything, vent, explain exactly how they feel. I know I sure as hell don't. Even if you don't have a medical reason, therapy can be good to just get it all out there.

But, like I said, it's all about finding the right one. Most won't be.

I find it interesting that both words in the title of this thread have the "h" omitted in them. pzabby - why don't you lie back and tell us what you dislike about the letter h.

Sorry - there's my brain - goes readily to fucking around.

I went to see a psychiatrist in high school when I had some sleeping problems. He was somewhat helpful, just prescribed some drugs and diagnosed me with anxiety.

I think a psychologist can dig deeper and find what's causing your troubles though.
