yeah, i think in hip-hop you see people use "instrumental" and "beat" interchangeably which from a musical perspective may not be correct...but i guess i just interpret it as one and the same.

thanks for the clarification. i've heard that terminology before, but i always think of those as 'bed tracks'. just wanted to specify what was going on here.

i'll refrain from the non-hip-hop 'sick' beats i was going to post and just stick to the 'what are you listening to' thread.

2. is this just about hip-hop/electronic music (or even hip-hop with a band like the roots), or are we talking beats in general? i'm thinking of funk bands, boogaloo, jazz, etc. there are so many incredible beats - and i mean that musically, as in drum breaks, playing with time and rhythm, etc - that are not part of the genre that is almost exclusively represented here.

i hope i am not sounding condescending. i am just curious about what we are examining here. is this about 'beat' or about electronic instrumentals?

Just post something sick that lacks words. I wanted something to keep me amped but I didn't like hearing words. I was using movies to keep me awake but wanted to switch to tunes without words.
