Default Levon Helm

Sad, sad, sad. I'd always planned to see him perform, but alas. He was still performing shows a couple weeks ago. Anyway, one of my all time favourites - both vocally and instrumentally.

Quote:
Levon Helm, the revered multi-instrumentalist and singer for the group the Band, is in the final stages of cancer, according to his family.

A heartbreaking note appeared on the musician's website Tuesday announcing that he is terminally ill:

Dear Friends,

Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.

Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration… he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage…

We appreciate all the love and support and concern.

From his daughter Amy, and wife Sandy

Helm was scheduled to play Wellmont Theater in New jersey earlier this month but cancelled due to a back injury. At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, former bandmate Robbie Robertson sent "love and prayers" out to Helm.

Notable for those who understand the history between these two...

Last week I was shocked and so saddened to hear that my old band mate, Levon, was in the final stages of his battle with cancer. It hit me really hard because I thought he had beaten throat cancer and had no idea that he was this ill. I spoke with his family and made arrangements to go and see him.

On Sunday I went to New York and visited him in the hospital. I sat with Levon for a good while, and thought of the incredible and beautiful times we had together. It was heartwarming to be greeted by his lovely daughter Amy, whom I have known since she was born. Amy’s mother, Libby Titus, and her husband, Donald Fagen, were so kind to help walk me through this terrible time of sadness. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Sandy.

Levon is one of the most extraordinary talented people I’ve ever known and very much like an older brother to me. I am so grateful I got to see him one last time and will miss him and love him forever.

Levon Helm passed peacefully this afternoon. He was surrounded by family, friends and band mates and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul.
And that is that. So long, Levon.

Inside Levon Helm Studios is the closed casket where Helm rests.

A visitor to the public memorial will get in line at Levon Helm Studios. The line moves quickly. A visitor will then walk inside, through the lower level, past pictures of Helm and his band.

Then upstairs, and past Barbara O'Brien, Helm's manager, and into the main room of Levon Helm Studios. Helm's Gretsch drums sit where they've always sat, at the right end of the stage. In the center is Helm, inside the closed casket, surrounded by flowers. Soft music plays, and a slideshow reveals photos of Helm with his wife, Sandy, daughter, Amy, grandchildren, and others.

Hundreds of Helm's fans and friends have congregated on Woodstock for today's public memorial. Upon entering Levon Helm Studios on Plochmann Lane, people are asked to turn off cell phones and cameras. There is no photography allowed.

Apparently, he'll be buried next to Rick Danko in Woodstock, NY.
