Default The Lady and the Tiger - A Riddle For The Ages

Once upon a time, long long ago, there lived a king. A very barbaric king who ruled with an iron fist. He was king only because of birthright and not because of wisdom. In his kingdom, the penalty for lawbreaking was harsh: if you were found guilty of a crime, you were put in an arena in which most people fought lions in gladiator games. There were 2 doors in this arena, of which one you must choose. Behind one door was a lady; of the beautiful sort, and, if you opened the door with the lady in it, you were instantly married. Never mind your previous marital status, but you were married on the spot. Behind the other door was a tiger; of the hungry sort, and, if you opened the door with the tiger in it, you were eaten.

Now, in this kingdom lived a man. He was a great man of status and nobility. He was loved by many, but only loved one: the princess, daughter of the king who we talked about earlier. Now, the princess loved him back, and their love bloomed, until the king found out. Even though the young man was of status, he was not a prince of another kingdom. He had the man arrested and put on trial.

The king chose the kingdom's most 'eligible bachelorette' so to speak as the lady behind the door. He also chose the kingdom's most hungry tiger as the tiger behind the other door. Here, the princess knew the woman. She hated her guts; and her jealousy was one example of her semi-barbarism (which she got from her father, the king). She was very angry and thought a while.

She then went to the arena, where her lover would soon be tried in a risky game of chance. She saw the woman and a tiger in separate doors. She knew which one was in which door and kept a note of it.

On the day of the trial, the man was put in an arena, whose seats were filled with just about every citizen of the kingdom. The rich, poor, smart, ignorant were there. The princess and the king were sitting in a place where only the prince can see them. Now, remember, behind one door, there lay a lady, ready to be married. Behind the other, a tiger, about to devour the young man whole.

The young man was looking to the princess for guidance. In that instant, without anyone looking, not even the king, she gestured to the right. The young man opened the right door. Now, here I ask you: what came out, the lady or the tiger?

This question still eludes people today, and of this I cannot find an answer. Think hard about the princess and her gesture. What are her motives: to allow her lover to marry another, just to keep him alive, or did her barbarism take over and point to the door with the tiger? Answer yourself!

Meh...this one is easy for me.

Cleary she chose the one with the Woman. I think if you love something enough you let it live...even if it means letting it go. Sending him to the Toger would be selfish..which is not a symptom of barbarianism

It may not be that simple.

Bear in mind that humans are violent by nature and live within the confines of controlled chaos. When primal rage, confusion, or frustrations take over, it's quite easy to give into the desire to destroy things. It is quite conceivable, given her jealousy and irrationality, to have pointed to the door with the tiger. Do you think love is innately stronger than the urge to disassemble or destroy? Would it not be easier for her to have him killed and the pain exist momentarily rather than have him spend a lifetime with a woman she hated? Would that urge not be strong enough for someone in that state of mind to make that rash decision?

The question, quite obviously, is of a philosophical nature and, as such, doesn't have a correct answer. Rather, the way you answer it reflects on your personality traits and, possibly, leads to self-analysis, soul searching and other meaningless crap.

Meanwhile, I am NOT a woman and so I am not qualified to answer this question, and neither is Benzo, I hope.

Had I been a man in the arena, I'd look long and hard into having an AK-47 ready. Put yourself in his shoes: if he follows her advice, any outcome is quite bad! If he sees the tiger behind that door, it means his beloved is a selfish fuck. If he sees a lady, it means the princess loves him so much that the life with another woman must be unbearable for him (I am assuming affairs are punishable by the same arena choice in that kingdom).

Like I said, the correct answer for a male is as follows:

1. Get your hands on AK-47 and a lot of extra clips in the bag.
2. Open any door you like. In fact, don't even look at the princess (you don't want to know the truth about how she feels anyway, what with women being about as steady as, say, a spring weather). Open the doors ignoring the ladies and looking for a tiger. Shoot the crap out of the tiger, thus demonstrating your resolve and tactical capabilities. Than turn to the king's lounge and announce, in a grave voice: "I will be leaving now, OK? But I WILL BE BACK". Curtains.

*takes a bow*

He opens both doors releasing the tiger and the woman. He throws the woman towards the tiger and she gets devoured.

The tiger is now full and ignores the him, and he is single once again. The end.

The answer is, he always picked the right door because it doesn't matter what door he opened.

Yeah chew on that.

But what is right for this man? Being forced to marry a woman he does not love and having to live with her for the rest of his life, dying each day on the inside day by day or get it over and done with quick although maybe messy?

We are also missing the third possibility, this is Tarzan and he kills the tiger becomes absurdly famous in the kingdom and extremely rich through promotional deals no doubt and the king relents (because this man is now the most famous and richest in the kingdom) and marries the princess.

Okay, he busts out his Predator Drone and kills everyone. God I need to get away from MW2.

But really, the Princess tells him to open the door with the woman. She loves him and obviously if he is alive he still has the chance to be with her
