Default Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak

Wow, I've listened to this over and over to convince myself that it can't be this embarrassing, but alas, it is. I actually laughed out loud at some tracks, like "Robocop."

This snuck in just in time for most disappointing release of 2008. Yikes.

Yeah it is not that good. Different but not that good. Kanye is one of my favourite artist but I was nothing to get excited about.

I give him credit for stepping outside of his normal boundaries, but not enough credit to even call it decent. I've never been a huge Kanye fan, but I've always appreciated his talent. I'm just not feeling this album at all.

does he still "sample" entire songs and then just rap over top of them?

i.e. Curtis Mayfield, Daftpunk?

I guess I would say I'm a fan of Kanye but i'm not a big fan of the album...seems a little too "soft" if you know what i mean. He tried something different but it didn't work out imo

Next time west

Hip Hop didn't die, it just got so popular that you have to wade through a lot of crap to find the good stuff. You don't have to spend years learning an instrument to get started and all it takes is one good hook to get you some airplay. Then you just produce crap after that (and it might have been crap in the first place).

What kills me is when I point out the samples to friends and colleagues and they say, "Oh really? I thought ______ created this himself!" It really hurts. My answer is always, "Um...no...Gil Scott Heron/Curtis Mayfield/Roy Ayers, etc. did this a long time ago"

On a radio show I used to pop in on every once in a while (WeFunk - Montreal CKUT), they had WeFunk Sample Moments, where the original was played and then mixed into the song with the sample. Education.

Oh yeah, and Akon sucks.

Kinda, he covered a Tears for Fears song for 808s and Heartbreak and changed some of the lines.

"I told her if she had an image and gimmick, she could make money,
and she did it like a dummy.
now i see her in commercials, she's universal
she used to only swing it with the inner-city circle.
Now she be in the burbs lickin rock and dressin hip
And on some dumb shit, when she comes to the city
Talkin about poppin glocks servin rocks and hittin switches
Now shes a gangsta rollin with gangsta bitches
Always smokin blunts and gettin drunk
Tellin me sad stories, now she only fucks with the funk
Stressin how hardcore and real she is
She was really the realist, before she got into showbiz
I did her, not just to say that I did it
But Im committed, but so many niggaz hit it
That shes just not the same lettin all these groupies do her
I see niggaz slammin her, and takin her to the sewer
But ima take her back hopin that the shit stop
Cause who Im talkin bout yall is hip-hop"

Back in the days when I was a teenager
Before I had status and before I had a pager
You could find the Abstract listening to hip hop
My pops used to say, it reminded him of be-bop
I said, well daddy don't you know that things go in cycles
The way that Bobby Brown is just ampin like Michael
Its all expected, things are for the lookin
If you got the money, Quest is for the bookin
Come on everybody, let's get with the fly modes
Still got room on the truck, load the back boom
Listen to the rhyme, to get a mental picture
of this black man, through black woman victim
Why do I say that, cuz I gotta speak the truth man
Doing what we feel for the music is the proof and
Planted on the ground, the act is so together
Bonafied strong, you need leverage to sever
The unit, yes, the unit, yes, the unit called the jazz is
deliberatley cheered LP filled with streeet goods
You can find it on the rack in your record store (store)
If you get the record, then your thoughts are adored
and appreciated, cause we're ever so glad we made it
We work hard, so we gotta thank God
Dishin out the plastic, do the dance till you spastic
If you dis... it gets drastic
Listen to the rhymes, cuz its time to make gravy
If it moves your booty, then shake, shake it baby
All the way to Africa a.k.a. The Motherland (uh)
Stick out the left, then I'll ask for the other hand
That's the right hand, Black Man (man)
Only if you was noted as my man (man)
If I get the credit, then I'll think I deserve it
If you fake moves, don't fix your mouth to word it
Get in the zone of positivity, not negativity
Cuz we gotta strive for longevity
If you botch up, what's in that (ass) (what?)
A pair of Nikes, size ten-and-a-half (come on, come on)

One of my favourite verses of all time, the final verse from "I Got It Made" - Special Ed.

Im kinda spoiled
Cuz everything I want I got made
I wanted gear--got everything from cotton to suede
I wanted lead--i didnt beg I just got laid
My hair was growin too long, so I got me a fade
And when my dishes got dirty, I got cascade
When the weather was hot, I got a spot in the shade
Im wise because I rise to the top of my grade
Wanted peace on earth, so to God I prayed
Some kids across town thought I was afraid
They couldnt harm me--
I got the army brigade
Im not a trader
If what you got is greater Ill trade
But maybe later cuz my waiter made potato -n- alligator souflee--
I got it made
