Default jamming

I know there are some music lovers on here, who also play instruments. Well I was wondering if any of you are in a band, or know some people and just "jam". My long time friend came over today, and he's a guitarist and we tried to "jam" together. Sure my piano isn't really anywhere yet, but I know some scales, etc and so we tried, but it didn't work out too well.

How does one "jam"? pick a scale, and everyone plays on that scale and tries to find a nice rhythm/melody/harmony? Is there something else? help would be appreciated.

thanks

Pick a chord progression and take turns soloing over it.

Try something like this to practice.

Key Chords

There are other ones with bass, drums etc.

I dont know how would you do it with a piano, but normally drummer starts a beat and the rest improvize, or guitarist (basist)comes up with a rif and the rest folow

I think an important thing to do is to establish what "flavour" you want to jam in. If you want to do blues, jazz, or rock. For blues, you pick a key and you put the progression down and you wail the blues scale. For rock, just play progressions from your favourite songs and play over them. For jazz you'll need to learn melodies, harmony, etc. For most styles of music blues scale or a mode (usually dorian) will get you through the jam

I play the guitar, but we usually trade instruments. Over the course of the night i played guitar, bass, and drums. I'm a really shitty drummer, but i can hold down a beat and do some simple fills.
