Default The International Food Thread

Seeing as how we have so many cultures represented here on RF, I thought this would be a good place to ask about good dishes and discuss the culinary arts of foods you appreciate from other countries.

So first off, I think Italians make the best pastries/desserts in the world, although admittedly, I haven't tried too many treats from other countries. Someone in my office told me Portuguese pastries are pretty good too.

Here are some things I eat on a weekly basis:

Indian food (chicken karahi and curry dishes)
Japanese food (sushi)
Vietnamese food (pho and rice plates)
Italian food (pasta dishes)

What about you guys?

I live on Mexican, Thai/Malaysian, Indian, Japanese, Italian and Greek. All of which I am able to cook all on my own pretty well - I especially do a kick-ass Sukiyaki. I don't really cook much Greek though.

For desserts there's a Russian cake place in North York, at Yonge and Steeles that is the best ever. Chocolada is the place.

Anybody who likes Indian food has to try the Dhaba downtown on King for the lunch buffet. Great value for outstanding food that is better than any I had in India.

i pretty much eat everything. the french perfected cuisine in many ways, but they can't do anything spicy or with any 'eastern' flavours. i could eat coq au vin 7 days per week, though.

don't even get me started on west indies food - ox tail, curried goat, jerk chicken, rotis... damn...

i live in little korea, so i get down on bibimbap and pork bone soup on a regular basis.

my wife's on her way to tacos el asador right now to bring back some el salvadorian chow.

jeebus i'm hungry now.

I love sushi, italian and mexican, but seriously if you want to eat deverse and high quality food, go to the north of Spain.

Spanish food> French food. french food is the most overrated food ever.

Hey Bel, there is this one Spanish pastry that's like a flan. It's really light and fluffy, powdered white. I used to eat it as a kid when I used to live in a Spanish neighbourhood way back when I was a kid. Any idea what that's called?

I dont know man, there are so many... but I cant think right now of one with that carasteristic. What you are saying sounds like a Coconut Flan, wich is really typical in Puerto Rico, but a spanish one?, I dont know I will ask my brother, he is a good cook.

Hubby and I are both Persian so we do a lot of Persian cooking at home. Aside from that, I love everything and anything ... Indian food is top of the list because of all the good good spice (seriously, I think I will burn a hole through my stomach lining by the time I reach 30 with all the spice that I eat).

Sushi and I loathe each other. My stomach can't handle it, for some reason.

Hey Lang, you may now something about this, a friend of my brother told me about a chinese food called "the three screams?"(I dont know if this is the correct translation).
Well anyway, this guys are some kind of gourmets. They eat everything, insects and all the crazy stuff. But they told me when they went to China, they found the only plate they couldnt eat. It was called "the three screams".

You eat newly born hamsters or mouse I dont remember. Three screams:
-The first scream is when you put the fork in one of them.
-The second one is when you put the hamster in the boiling oil.
-The third scream is when you bite it.

EDIT: I forgot to point the fact that the screams are done by the hamsters wich are alive.

i love my indian food as i am indian but man the years of spices has taken its toll on my stomach.

I cant eat brown or other spicey/acidic foods without first takin prevacid pills or overdosing on yogurt lol.

As for my favorite...obviously indian although i have an appetite to try all sorts of ethnic foods...i love asian (thai, chinese, korean, japanese), greek and some italian dishes.

I love indian/west indian/chinese fused foods if done right.

I'll eat anything that tastes good. I haven't had much African food so im open to any of your suggestions.
