Default Injury Question Vol. IIII

I often ask the board as I know there are athletes on here, some previously spectacular athletes WHO PLAYED BALL(ie SJ) and some who have been there and done that with a variety of sports. That and I hate waiting an hour and a half in line for a walk in clinic for a doctor to tell me to take some tylenol and rest.

Anyways, the scoop this time is yesterday I was playing ball and some clown clotheslined me when I crossed him up causing my neck to go back really quickly. It didnt seem like anything at the time as I continued playing, but of course this morning I cant move my neck to the right. Its either a strain or pull.

I've heard that icing it is the best thing. I've heard to ice it then put a heating pad on it.

Anyone had this injury before? What should I do and how long(ie how long to ice it then take the ice off and put it back on for?)

I'm not an athlete, but I've had neck issues forever. Ice on for 20, off for 20... at least, that's what I was always told.

for back and neck, i always used heated pads opposed to the cold ones. i though using the cold was only to prevent swelling.

Yeah, i had this type of injury when i played hockey as a kid and that's what i was told to do. The pain subsided within 4-5 days. Obviously, other options are message therapy, pain meds, try not to sleep awkwardly it'll just make it worse.

Heated Magic Bag!

I hurt my neck 11 years ago and it's never really healed.

Thriller.

could be anything from a strain to mild whiplash. Keep an eye for very sharp pains though, and when I mean sharp I mean the ones that hit you like a truck and feel like the burn... many a neck has bee broken or cracked with th poor guy not knowing it.

Now assuming it's not broken ( i hope), Baracuda is bang on. I live with a pretty smart personal fitness coach and thats what he does. The alternate hot cold treatment is best. The Heated pad is good for initially heating it up though for stretching...you ABSOLUTELY must stretch it and massage it. Hopefully you have a nice girl in Ottawa to help you out with that!

Thanks for the advice everyone. INSIDER was right. I thought it was worse than it was. It still hurts to turn but its better now, and it should be back to normal by SUN.
