Default I like this guy

i love tunes. lots of 'em. my brother, tho, really loves tunes. he's an encyclopedia, much like our friend acie here (but with a massive hip hop catalogue in his brain and maybe less modern rock).

my bro sent me a link to this the other saying he liked this guy because he loves tunes the same way my bro loves tunes. now i like this guy too. agree with him or not (and imo it's hard not to), he loves the music. all of it.

the title is misleading, and he's a bit of a douche at times, but the content is gold.

there are many, many episodes of this, but here are the first few. let me know what you think.

There's a good collection of CD's called "Sampled" that essentially just has a variety of tracks that have been sampled in modern music. Good variety. It's a set of 4 double discs. Pretty good.

But yeah, this guy is good, I've seen his stuff before.

When i dj'd (years ago) i used to love playing classic soul funk songs that were sampled by hiphop artists.

As soon as people could make out the "sample" they were all over it.

i remember getting into this fueled debate with some "head" a few year's back. he was rankling off how hip hop is s supremely original music that's grown beyond it's roots/routes. he said jazz was pathetic, and that hip hop didn't owe anything to the artists that laid down the foundations.
i called bullshit. i asked him if he liked ice cube. he nodded. i asked him if he liked pete rock. nodded again. i asked him what he thought of nas' first album "illmatic". said it was legendary. not taking anything away from that, but how can you say any of those acts are what they are without acknowledging that their sound is the direct result of the music they were exposed to as evolving artists?

i guess commercialism does really distort someone's view on the temporal evolution of an art form and political movement. i guess it does make things seem like they fell from the sky.

the good thing about this guys is that he isn't criticizing anybody. he loves the original tunes and he also loves that modern artists have borrowed, re-shaped and quoted these songs as a tribute.

Yeah, the guy just loves music and that's the important thing.

My friend runs a show on CKUT in Montreal called WeFunk (I used to help out a bit back in the day...before I got my own show back in here called Kibbles and Beats) and he runs the original and the sample mixed together all the time. It's called the WeFunk Sample Moment. If you're in Montreal, make sure you're tuning into that on CKUT 90.3. It used to be Friday nights at midnight...not sure if it still is.

Anyone ever gotten a chance to check out any Nujabes tracks? Makes some of the illest jazz rap beats I've ever heard. I know he samples Miles Davis on a lot of his beats as well as some other Jazz dudes I'm not too hip to.

One of my personal favourites:

I've listened to a bit of Nujabes before. I love his stuff too. Learned about him through watching Samurai Champloo.
