How's the Weather?

testing... testing...
anyone reading me?

What's it like out there for you guys.

unfortunately they don't close hospitals when a snow storm hits, so i have to be at work today. boo.

When i woke up this morning and looked at my window, i pretty easily decided to take the Go Train in to work. Getting here was normal, but i'm praying there won't be any usual weather-related Go train delays for my way home.

Anyways, not sure if the internet can still work with this appocalytic climate, so if anyone reads, this is fancylad casting off.

over.

Claudius 02-01-2008 08:40 AM

lol.

I have to head into Toronto today for 11 am. So far no delys on the GO. But I'm really, really hoping the function I have to head to gets cancelled.

Dr. J. Naismith 02-01-2008 08:43 AM

It hasn't started snowing here in Ottawa yet, but they're saying its going to start shortly between 11am and Noon. 20cms this afternoon and another 10 cms tonight. :(

Travel and drive safe guys wherever your heading today. :)

Sick, Wicked and Nasty! 02-01-2008 08:52 AM

Nuts between Stratford and Waterloo but since i took wednesday off already i decided to come to work today... took a long time to get here but i made it :)

'trane 02-01-2008 09:08 AM

I shoveled my sidewalk and stairs at 7:00 this am, went inside, had a shower, ate breakfast, and then had to shovel again. Lovely. Made it to work no problem, but I'm the only one here out of 30 and people are bailing left right and centre. Meh... at least I'll have a chace to catch up on paperwork. By the time I get home there will be a shit-ton more snow, but at least I already shoveled off a big chunk.

Gotta love Toronto.

On a side note, this reminds me of Plato's Crito. Don't know if we have any philosophers in the crowd (C2G??)... In it, Socrates gives one of the all-time best arguments for the rule of law and lolyalty to the state. In it, he has been tried in court and was sentenced to death (this takes place in the Apology, but this particular argument is put forth in the Crito, I believe). A friend comes in to the jail to break him out and lead him to freedom, but Socrates chooses to stay in jail and face his fate. He argues that because he lived in Athens for his whole life and didn't leave - he knew the laws - he had therefore submitted to following those laws, and was subject to the court's decision.

Once you have decided to participate in a society, you are obligated to live by its requisite rules. You can work to change them from within, but if you break them, you should be subject to the applicable penalties.

So, here I am in Toronto, and it's cold and snowing like a bastard. I could have upped and moved to Van City or Barbados, but I chose to stay here because this is where my friends and family are, and it is the city I love. Now I'm subject to the reality of the city. It's snowing and there's nothing I can do about it. Better to accept my fate, do my duty at work, go home, shovel the show, smile at my neighbour and his kids, and go inside for a couple of beers.

Thanks Plato. You made it a lot easier to take.

Yes, I am that big a nerd.

:hailtheking:

nice post Coltrane.

funny about philosophy... i've always kinda hated it. Not to say i don't agree with it or don't "get it" per se, but it usually goes over my head is all. and my wife's a philosophy teacher. go figure.

she hates basketball though.

INSIDER 02-01-2008 09:18 AM

well i'm officially fucked for the drive home today!
i parked at the GO station and saw a bunch of people lift their windshield wipers off their windsheild so that it would be easier to clean and wouldnt stick when they get back to their cars tonight. so i decided i'd do the same.
so i try to lift the driver's side wiper and its pretty sticky so i pull harder and completely break the wiper in half! i ripped it right off the hinge!

we're expecting a snow storm and i'll be without a driver's side wiper!

i just went down to grand and toy and bought some crazy glue and duct tape... hopefully that will help out tonight...
luckily my place is only 3 minutes from the Go station... i think i'll make it. i hope.

fancylad 02-01-2008 09:23 AM

Ouch insider... that is shitty.

Although having seen your photo i can't say i'm surprised by your brute strength.
lol.

Claudius 02-01-2008 09:24 AM

Coltrane, honestly, your post had me laughing. And yeah, I understand my philosophy and I love it to a degree. It can be confusing, but the best way to understand philosophy is to apply it your surroundings and eventually it should make sense (except for Hegel, I fucking HATE hegel).

ON a side note, it has stopped snowing here. Not that much maybe 8-10 cm here.

hehehe, i think it was cracked already... i hope it was because it broke way too easy.
ii'm praying the crazy glue and duct tape work because i can imagine how bad it'll be this afternoon/evening... plus i'm too cheap to actually get it fixed later.
i'm using the Red Green philosophy! its all about the duct tape baby!

Yeah, Hegel is an asshole. And Kant. I mean, do you really have to be that opaque???

Insider - if it's just the wiper blade you ripped off, you can get 'em cheap at any gas station, but you probably know that and actually ripped off the whole wiper. In that case, you're fucked.

But it reminds me of another bit from Plato. In the Republic, Thrasymachos argues that justice is simply the advantage of the stronger - in other words, might makes right. I think we don't even need Socrates' response. You just proved Thrasymachos wrong.

Dr. J. Naismith 02-01-2008 10:32 AM

Is the weather really that bad in the GTA? I just got an email from our corporate head office in Mississauga and they've shut down their office completely because of the weather. It has to be pretty bad for them to shut it down all together.

fancylad 02-01-2008 10:35 AM

hey insider, it might be worth your while to get the wiper part from a scrapyard. Depending on how old your car is and how popular it is, it may save you a lot of money.

I got quite a few parts for my past cars from scrapyards and have never had a problem with them.

Just get a yellow pages and call around.

just a guess, but i can't see your duct tape solution lasting more than a few days. If you're looking for a bandaid solution maybe some fiberglass or e-poxy will do the trick.

Benzo 02-01-2008 10:37 AM

Ugh ... hate to be working for you today. :(

nah humbug.

It sucks, but it sucks for all of us, and none of us moved to Van City, so we're here and we gotta deal. Now's the time to grin, have a slow day, and let everyone go home early. Put a smile on people's faces, 'cause the weather ain't gonna do it for them.

Wouldn't it be best if everyone in your office went home tonight saying, 'damn, Benzo is a good boss. He made an otherwise shitty day turn out to be pretty good.'

hmm?

:peace1:

thanks for the advise fancy.
my co-workers are having a good laugh at my expense...
they also told me to check out a scrap yard or buy a used part online.

hopefully i can get home with the duct tape, then find the exact same part via a scrap yard or used part source.
looks like my 2008 Porsche will be without a wiper for the next few days.;)
