Default High Ankle Sprain Advice

I really sprained my ankle badly on Apr 30 by landing on one of my friends feet when going up for a layup, I came down on it and it twisted hard and I was screaming in pain for a good 10 minutes. I couldnt put any pressure on it for about 5 days, and then of course when I felt like I could possibly go on it I did and it went back to feeling terrible again. I scheduled an appt tomorrow with my family doctor to get more advice and get an MRI, as I went to a couple clinics and got an x ray and it came back as negative.

Anyways, I've received differing advice on how I should get it better(besides rest).

One opinion is to wrap it tight with the long bandage so it stays in a near set position, and then icing it for 10-20 minutes every hour or two, then re wrapping it.

The other is to put my foot in hot water(the swelling is gone now).

Which is the correct choice?

And/or is there another way you recommend in getting it better quicker? Or steps I should take daily to get it better?

It's killing me not being able to play multiple times a week. Help please.

from what i know, everyone has a different recovery time from ankle sprains. when i sprained mine a couple years ago, my ankle swelled up badly and couldnt walk on it for 2 days. to ease the pain i put an ice pack on it for more then half a day and then had no choice but to toughen up and head to school. Though it took me 2 weeks before I could somewhat play basketball again, my ankle took a month and a half before it started feeling normal again

Sometimes ankle sprains take more than a year to fully heal and when you aggravate it, it only extends the recovery time. Always follow the RICE procedure: rest, ice, compress, elevate. Buy an ankle brace as it is really helpful in preventing further injury when playing basketball again. Hope this helps.

Do whatever your doctor says...or if you don't buy that...go to a sports doctor and get into physio. They'll take care of you for pain relief, treatment and rehab.

yep. young guys (myself included) often feel invincible. You aren't.

Once the swelling goes down, you absolutely MUST get referred to a good Physio facility and follow what they tell you to do 100%.

There is no other way. And the stuff they ask you to do seems too easy at times, but it is exactly whats needed.

I was turfed for 3 months with a sprain once, taped it up with duct tape and tried to keep playing. All it did was keep me hurt, and lead to a bit of trouble in that ankle later in life.

It's shitty bad luck brother, but you'll get through it.

Same here.

Got back on the ice one week after a really bad sprain, taped it up and tried to numb the pain with Deep Ice. On the first shift I had the puck in my skates along the boards and got kicked in the ankle and had to crawl off the ice and be assisted to the dressing room. The doctor basically told me because I was such a dumbass, there was a good chance it would probably bother me for the rest of my life. After it fully healed it was fine for a long time, but in the last few years every now and then after a lot of activity, I get a dull aching pain in it.

Make sure you take care of it properly.

Yeah I went to my family doc today and he basically told me to put it in ice a couple times a day and gave me a referral to a physiotherapy place nearby. I'm going there tmrw. Thanks for the advice guys.

Thrill,

I had a terrible ankle problem throughout all of high school. I couldn't be on a court for 5 minutes without twisting or spraining it. That shit was awful especially because I would never take any time off. I'd be right on the court after 5 minutes. Eventually it went away as the muscles in my ankle strengthened over time (because I kept playing on a bum ankle) but now my right ankle is permanently swollen.

Before it gets to that point I'd definitely go to a good physio (if the one you go too isn't good, PM me and you can go to my dads clinic, he's a straight up magician when it comes to healing people.) I was lucky as I was younger and my body adapted to it, had it happened in my early twenties, I doubt I'd be playing ball right now.

It died off already. The pain is still there but I have to be doing something physical for it to flare up again. I think I slept bad this morning which aggravated it. I couldn't even move my neck at all this morning without getting a sharp shooting pain.

I got booted in the shin when playing soccer. It was just a friendly work soccer game so we don't bother wearing shin pads. The shin fucking hurts like a bitch and is bruising up. Is icing it the best solution?
