The story about Selaron is pretty crazy. Sounds like material for a film. I'm going to Brazil in December. I'll have to check that staircase out. A shame that he won't be there.

While there's no disputing that population is a big part of the problem, the root of it lies in the sheer greedy madness of a growth economy over 500 years. There's a hell of a lot that you and I need to be forced into, namely living within the material means of a finite world. Big families do not make it impossible to stop burning carbon. My grandmother was one of 20+ kids, and they had a fraction of the impact on the environment that I do alone.

but you also have to think of it in terms of this. those 10 kids consume resources and even more so once they grow up. this only adds to the problem. yes it's not the only part of the problem, but a truly big one. so I think we're on the same page?

pzabby, the main difference between the era LX is mentioning and today's era, in my view, is that we live in a culture of conspicuous consumption that is unlike any era in modern history.

Population has an effect, yes, but I'd argue conspicuous consumption is the true culprit. That and an overall lack of knowledge and demonizing science/critical thinking.

fair enough, but I think the real monster is the existence of both problems in the same era. I read an article that said over half the world's food is going to waste. now I don't know how they can possibly accuractly come to such a conclusion, but waste is a problem. say even 1/4 of our food goes to waste, that's 1/4 of produce made for a population of 7 billion (and rising). to make said produce has a massive carbon effect. if the population was half of what it is (which is still too high in honesty) the carbon footprint could be cut by half

now I know I'm severely oversimplifying but you get my message
