As i have an affinity telecaster, i can vouche for the affinity guitars. i like 'em. They really are awesome for the price. $179. Stay away from the bullet series... they are shit.

the LP 100 might be alright. it's $265.

If i was to get one, i'd look for a standard which for some reason doesn't seem available as per their website.

I saw a epi les paul studio for 350ish in december, it migh have been used though, not sure

my squire has done its time, I need a new guitar. It keeps getting out of tune every couple songs, and the g string has that weirdness where it doesnt vibrate properly, has sort of a muted sound/feel to it.

that's the thing with the affinity, box1992. The thing stays in tune better than a guitar i have with grover tuners. I'm telling ya this thing is boss.

so i finished fixing up my bullet stratocaster recently. Changed out all the electronics and now have a humbucker. Installed kluson style tuners. Set up the tremolo again (i had it blocked). Initially i got a pearl pickguard, but i found this too 'glammy' so i went with a classic white-black-white 3 ply one instead. I have been playing it the last few days and it is vastly improved. It sounds great now. Stays in tune like a boss and i'm really digging the humbucker. It's really cool to have given this shitty guitar (my first one) a nice facelift. I'm really pleased with the results.

So now i think i might sell my other strat. It's a standard strat by squier. It's superior in every way compared to the bullet i was mentioning above, but i don't need to own 2 strats. I'm just trying to decide what to price to list it at. It's in mint (or near mint condition and fender emailed me the specs amongst which is a suggested retail price of $379. The only thing i don't have is the trem arm. Here's a picture:

hey quick question for you les paul dudes. I am looking at a used one. Just got a photo from the seller which shows a chip (but it may be a crack) in the neck. I don't care if it's just the paint or finish as long as that's it. Guy lives sort of far and if this is enough of a red flag then i wouldn't waste my time. What do you guys think:

if the wood is cracked, stay the hell away from it. the neck takes too much tension and it will deteriorate. if it is just a crack in the finish you're better off, but i'd still stay away. it will spread, possibly vibrate, and might need to be re-finished one day. refinished guitars rarely sound as good as the original did.

ya i'm thinking this is enough of a red flag. It's not like this is a bolt on neck that i can replace myself either. I don't mind the odd ding or chip, but this doesn't look like a chip.

The only way to find out is to see it in person. I can't really tell either.

If it's just the finish, I wouldn't worry about it.

If it's a crack in the neck, a good luthier can fix it up and it will be stronger than before it was cracked. Unfortunately, in this instance the cost of such an operation is going to be almost as much as the guitar is worth.

that's one of my favorite parts of woodstock. I actually just watched the film not that long ago (last month).

RIP.

new Guitar!

well sort of. Picked up a squier vintage modified Jaguar a couple weeks ago. This is a fun guitar to have. Especially since i love that retro instrumental/surf sound. Took a little while getting used to the shorter scale neck and the bridge needed a lot of adjustment intially. The thing was set up horribly when i got it. HORRIBLY. The general problem with these and jags in general is the vintage bridge sucks, but i am pretty happy with it since setting it up to my liking and changing the strings to 11s.

Only thing that i am on the fence about is which pickguard to go with. It came with the brown/red trotise pickguard, but i liked the idea of a white one. So i picked up a cheap one off ebay. I put it in, but now i am not sure which one to stick with. Both look 'classic' enough and i really like the white, but sometimes i get annoyed that the pickup covers don't really match the pickguard.

I'm curious as to which one you guys prefer.

Tortoise shell = imagine you're Kurt Cobain.
White = imagine you're Johnny Marr.

Sounds like you'd use it more like Johnny Marr.

that goes without saying Beans. Although the tort is very much at the heart of the 60s look that i like. speaking of Marr i'll be seeing him in concert next month. looking forward to it.

thanks for the feedback guys. the good thing is that it's pretty easy to switch out the guards so when i get bored of one i'll just go with the other.

update:
i took the guitar back to the shop and got it swapped with a candy apple red floor model. I was just never 100% with the sunburst even though i generally love sunburst guitars:

I like it a lot more now.
