cuda, what is your budget? As someone who owns mainly 'value' guitars, i may have a few recommendations.

Not sure, I likely won't be buying one right away. I'm pretty budgeted, so cheap is good. I saw a strat at Twelfth Fret for around $1,000 that I liked. But right now, the cheaper the better. Especially since I'm technically a beginner.

oh wow. i thought you were looking to spend around $200 or something.

You can totally get something decent for around $300. I have a Squier affinity telecaster which is pretty much my go to guitar at the moment and they cost $179. I definitely recommend you go the squier or epiphone route. If you like a strat, check out squier's higher end strats... they're still cheap and they are very good for the money. If you spend a little more you can opt for the mexican made fenders, but i think squiers are great and i take a lot of pride in mine.

Same goes with epiphones. Take a look at their les pauls (but not the les paul juniors). They're not that expensive, and again they're great instruments for what you pay.

I'd really recommend a store called capsule music on queen west(ish). They have good deals on second hand stuff.

Yeah, $200 WOULD be best! I just mentioned the one I saw because i'm used to seeing so many that are more than that. Don't get me wrong, I can't afford the one I saw

I go to Capsule all the time, and pay attention to their sales on Facebook.

I looked on Craigslist as well (a lot of people wanted to learn guitar and didn't, so they're selling like-new guitars). I see a lot of Squiers on there, and wasn't sure about 'em. Now I know! Thanks fancy!

If you want to spend a little more, you may one to check Yamaha guitars. They are cheap and have fairly decent quality.

just a heads-up - some squiers can be garbage. fancy is absolutely right that squiers and epiphones are solid guitars, but, like anything, there are plenty of lemons, especially if buying off craigslist. just make sure you play them and they feel nice, that the neck is solid and straight (no high frets) and that the tuners are tight and keep that tension. wonky tuners and wonky necks are the issues i have seen with squiers, and they're usually because the person didn't take good care of the guitar, not because the company is bad.

good luck!

oh definitely. the thing about cheap guitars is that they can be inconsistant so you really have to check them out.

there's a great dude on youtube called the swedish guitar nerd who does these fairly indepth reviews on 'economy' guitars. His review on the affinity tele pretty much sold me on it and i've had it for a while now and it truly doesn't dissapoint.

Do any of you know anything about Eagletones? I found a cheap one that is apparently good for beginners, but I've never heard of them before. It's second-hand for $50.

Yes, even though he doesn't know you.

I just texted him.

He's got a used red Squire Strat with a gig bag for $129.00. He said it's like new.

Cool.

I'll let him know.

Hopefully no one buys it between now and then.

rented an epi les paul for an event I had to play for, was playing the gibson one at the store, it is so nice. But when I tried out the PRS torero, I still feel nothing I have played so far comes close to how that feels in my hand. The fret board is the perfect thickness as well. and everything just fits right for me.

well there are different ones. there's the les paul junior, studio, standard and so on

here's the link:
Long & McQuade - Guitars, Acoustic Guitars, Electric Guitars, Guitar Cases & Cables

the LP 100 might be alright. it's $265.

If i was to get one, i'd look for a standard which for some reason doesn't seem available as per their website.
