I usually recommend people to start with the acustic unless you really really want to play electric.

And acustic is cheaper (since you dont need any more gear to make it work), you can play it anywhere, and its easier to move for the same reason above.

Also, the acustic its thougher for the fingers. so when you get an electric you will be much better, than the other way around. People that only play electric suck with an acustic.

EDIT: ok I said the same thing ACie did...

Other thing is that if you actually dont like it, you wont mind keeping the instrument. Its always nice to have an acustic. An electric, with the amps and cables will annoy the crap of you and you will get rid of it.

I prefer an acoustic and I dont find the strings any harder on the fingers, unless mabey you go with a heavy gauge string.

I guess I must have bigger hands/fingers or something because I prefer a wider neck with more room between the strings

If you use 12s or something like that on a electric and 9s on a acustic maybe. I use 10s in both, sometimes 11s on acustic and the diference is huge.

Still the action is usually a bit higher and you can't bend the stings as much. Thin strings sound like crap on an acoustic, especially if you want a nice rich, deep sound.

I use Ernie Ball Earthwood's.

i use 12's on everything and always go for flatwounds on my gibson electric. way better sound and playability.

as for guitars - if you are considering an acoustic, go with a Seagull (or Simon and Patrick or Norman or LaPatrie - all made by Godin). These are excellent canadian made guitars at a great price. Yyou really can't beat them in my opinion.

I've used GHS Boomers on one of my electrics before and they were decent. I don't know about their acoustic strings. I'd try them out at least, no sense wasting them and the wife will be happy you're using the present she got you.

From Corea, has a good reputation and looks like the original. Only bad thing is it's a limited edition (likely too good too cheap to be at the market too many time).

How it sounds (with a change of pickups), although it's said the original ones are good enough:

If you want to change the pickups: http://tvjones.com/home/home.htm

Where to buy the guitar: http://www.zzounds.com/item--GRE2505811

If you like Gretsch, looks like a good adquisition.
