Please name a great pioneering African American rock band then? Not an individual since we were discussing "bands".

If you really want to get all hoighty-toighty perhaps we should pay hommage to the blues, jazz and country artists who were the catalysts in influencing the beginnings of early rock 'n' roll.

Personal favourites aside, do you really feel the Chili Peppers, NIN, Queen, The Eagles, U2, Radiohead et al have been more influential in the annals of rock history than The Who, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and The Doors...?

Queen was extremly influential.I also think U2,THe Eagles,NIN are influential. The rest maybe debateable i guess but IMO the Beatles are way overrated,Sabbath wasn't that influential (my opinion),the Doors (i hated Jim morrison) and i don't hear bands today saying "our favorite band growing up was the doors", JM died young and that cemented him as a "Legend".And i never understood the facination with Pink Floyd either.

BTW Zepplin was my number one, so yeah they were influential.

I like Queen, but I personally don't consider them one of the true heavyweights of rock.

I hate the Eagles with a passion, but I respect that people like them. I just don't enjoy their watered down brand of generic country music.

Without Sabbath you have no Metallica and no NIN. To say they shaped the face of heavy metal music is an understatement.

Also, IMO it's one thing to not be a fan of The Beatles or Pink Floyd, but their bodies of work, record sales and the cultural impact both had speak for themselves. I mean even Bono thinks he's Lennon. lol

The Doors were one of the first bands to explore dark topics (during an era of peace, love and flower power nonetheless), have a theatrical frontman, blend poetry with music, etc... Scott Weiland, Eddie Vedder and Iggy Pop among others have all cited Morrison and the Doors as a major influence.

Sorry I missed Zeppelin.

Good topic.

For me no. 2 has to be the rolling stones. They were actually better than the Beatles in some regards (better when it came to their early R & B era at least). Otherwise when it came to creativity and meaningfulness nobody can touch the beatles. nobody.

my other great rock bands that i don't think have been mentioned would include:

The Jam: very underrated if you ask me. perfect mix of hard hitting, yet melodic tunes. Also Paul Weller's musical evolution was a thing of greatness.

tie between Depeche Mode / New Order: Those two were the best at blending electronic music with more pop oriented songs. They constantly put out great albums and have been HUGELY influential to countless artists and continue to be. I mean shit, take a listen to Music for the Masses or Power, Corruption and Lies and it'll still blow you out of the water.

I would mention Bob Marely and the Wailers, or Toots and the Maytals, but I know they're not "rock bands" so i guess they're void.

I don't think they've been mentioned yet, but the Ramones I think should be considered as one of the greatest rock bands. Eventhough they were more punk than rock, they were certainly innovators in my opinion.

If I had to go with a Punk band, I'd personally go with the Clash ahead of the Ramones. London Calling is still one of my personal favourite albums of all time and they really set the stage for what would occur in New York City and Toronto and even Detroit. Really without the Clash, the punk movement really doesn't receive the push it got.

Sex Pistols are only famous because of Sid Vicious. They were good and all; God Save the Queen is still an awesome song, but really beyond that they do nothing for me.

Keep in mind that The Stones first hit in England was a song The Beatles wrote.

I don't really consider the Sex Pistols as music .... just loud noises and lots for yelling and swearing. The Clash definitely could be considered one of the greatest too. Forget about them.

Speaking of influential bands, what about Nirvana-started the whole grunge movement.

Edit: the Sex Pistols may not have made good music but they where very influential in the punk movement in the UK, the Ramones in the US.

I would think that as far as commercial success then the Ramones are ahead of the Pistols but in terms of musical movement, the Sex Pistols are ahead of the Ramones with the Stooges just behind them.

I think alot of people when thinking of "The best Bands" mainly say the older bands: Zepplin, the Stones,Beatles etc..etc...

But i think for me anyway, you've gotta look at the music itself as well, not just the best selling,or longevity (Rolling stones should have retired 20 years ago).I think Nirvana was a huge band with great music and started the whole Grunge era along with Pearl Jam (not a fan of them though). Also bands like Green Day,and Rage are good bands that don't really get mentioned because they weren't around when things were just getting started.

To me it's like comparing athletes of today vs players from the 60's-70's.The whole Gretzky vs Orr kind of debates.I just think you can't not include the big bands of the last 15-20 years.

Did they or isn't Neil Young considered the father or grunge?

Is Nirvana really that great?

IMO Cobain wasn't even the most talented member of the band.
