The Great Shlep

Sarah Silverman annoys me to no end, but I gotta admit this is pretty funny. :giggle:

Only Tina Fey imo is great and she's not a stand up comedian. She just writes hilarious stuff (see: 30 Rock).

I'm funny.

Come visit me. You'll laugh. Or else.

:D

I don't know ... not all female comedians are lame INSIDER. Julia Lewis Dreyfus & Wanda Sykes are pretty freakin' hilarious. Wanda still does stand-up and is great and I know Julia used to do it back in the day. If you ever have a chance to watch "The New Adventures of Old Christine" on CBS, its pretty freakin' hilarious. :haha:

Its the same with music, so difficult to find good women singers. They usually just sound nice or beautiful, but without any personality. Of course you have your great exceptions.
See, Pj harvey, Patty Smith, Janis Joplin, black jazz/blues singers, etc...

I think its because women have much more personality problems (or lack of it) because of how men have opressed them in history. It has always been more dangerous for women to express their feelings/opinion/creativity so they are just much more gregarious than us men.

Pat Benatar, Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox

What? Women singers sound awesome. Neko Case being the greatest of them.

And Sarah Silverman is a riot. You all saw "I'm Fucking Matt Damon", right? Classic.

Belsius 10-28-2008 03:58 PM

Im not saying theres no good women singers, Im saying the percentage compared to men is minimum.

Women singers tend to get shut out by the music industry unless they fit certain parameters. Being a guy that looks for independent stuff and everything outside stuff with commercial appeal, I've found tons of great female artists.

I was just listening to Cocteau Twins - man that shit is good.

Belsius 10-28-2008 05:42 PM

again, did I say there are no good women vocalyst?. I said the proportion is minimum. Im a musician, and I know a lot of musicians, my family is full of musicians, my brother is a profesional jazz bassist and guitarist, his longtime girlfriend is an amazing drummer, two of my cousins have had fairly succesful bands, my aunt is a profesional singer and pretty much all my family plays an instrument or sings.
I know what Im talking about, (and Im not talking about the music industry, Im talking about individual musicians) when I say that women usually concentrate more on having a good and beautiful voice instead of putting personality and creativity on it.
Not that men doing that much either but definetly more than women.

LX 10-28-2008 07:17 PM

I'm not trying to dispute what you're saying Bel, I just think that there's a lot less room opened up for women's creativity, and I agree that less is there for men as time goes on as well. I could say the same thing about women comics, but things are actually getting much better in that area as opposed to the days when the male cast of SNL would be openly hostile to the female cast. Now I personally discount the popular tv comics and musicians for the most part, but they do have an effect on the kinds of possibilities that ordinary kids can see for themselves, and a lot of the women I have seen as young women or girls, have had a very limited idea of what being creative means to them. For the most part they have looked to be the girlfriend, or groupie of a creative person rather than the person that does the creating. And yet in many underground scenes that gets broken through, but ignored far too much so that it might have a greater effect on future generations.

But I hear what you're saying Bel, and don't really disagree.
