Default Gay slur disqualfies Dire Straits song from Canadian Radio

Quote:
The 1980s song Money for Nothing by the British rock band Dire Straits has been deemed unacceptable for play on Canadian radio.

In a ruling released Wednesday, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council says the song contravenes the human rights clauses of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ Code of Ethics and Equitable Portrayal Code.
Quote:
A listener to radio station CHOZ-FM in St. John's complained last year that the song includes the word “faggot” in its lyrics and is discriminatory to gays.

The broadcaster argued that the song had been played countless times since its release decades ago and has won music industry awards.

A CBSC panel concluded that the word “faggot,” even if once acceptable, has evolved to become unacceptable in most circumstances.

Banning it from all Canadian radio is a bit much. If they had to do something, couldn't they bleep it or change it? I realized the word comes up three times, but still. Banning it seems overboard.

Exactly.

I found this comment from the original article I read amusing:

Quote:
Okay, so now the homosexual community has been appeased. However, that song also contains the phrase "and your chicks for free" which is terribly sexist and demeaning to women. Political correctness demands that this line be censored along with "them guys ain't dumb" which would obviously be hurtful to anyone who is speech impaired. Or how about "Look at that mama, she got it stickin' in the camera" . Need I even comment on how objectionable that is? But there's more. "Hawaiian noises? Bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee." Comparing those of Polynesian heritage to apes must never be tolerated in a free and democratic society.

There's another version with 'faggot' turned into 'mother'. I thought radio stations still used that.

Alan Cross wrote an article about it. At the bottom he gives the number and email address of the guy people can complain to at the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council.

Ahem.

Guitarist of Dire Straits.

Seriously, he was the primary driver (lead guitarist, vocalist, writer) behind the group and is a wonderfully talented guitarist, both as a member of Dire Straits and as a solo artist.

Possibly. The names don't ring a bell though. Weren't they big in the mid 80's?

My older brother loves them. I grew up listening to that, but I never paid much attention to the lyrics.

Quote:
In a late 1985 interview in Rolling Stone magazine, Knopfler expressed mixed feelings on the controversy:

"I got an objection from the editor of a gay newspaper in London - he actually said it was below the belt. Apart from the fact that there are stupid gay people as well as stupid other people, it suggests that maybe you can't let it have so many meanings - you have to be direct. In fact, I'm still in two minds as to whether it's a good idea to write songs that aren't in the first person, to take on other characters."
It also says he changes the word when he performs it live. He probably wouldn't have written it had he known about future controversies.
