Yea true but if we don't tun of any of the street lights we are still causing a lot of polution. In this case light pollution. Seriously I think the bestthing to do to atleast limit that down would be to turn off maybe every 2nd or 3rd street lamp. We would cut down a lot and still have enough light on the street

We're powered by clean, hydroelectricty here, so I'll be keeping my lights on. I will, however, not pass wind for the hour.

again, gurk, it's not about saving power or cutting pollution in that moment, it's about a symbolic gesture. if the city turns off a street light and somebody gets attacked in the shadow it creates there would be a massive madia circus and lawsuit that would result. no way anyone lets that happen.

What's a symbolic gesture going to do if youdon't cut down on power and pollution. It only happens once a year so you might as well.

the point is that you think about it and try to cut down your power usage throughout the rest of the year. think of it as an advertisement, not your only window to participate.

So true. Turn off the lights for an hour? Pleeeeassssee, let's do something significant, like actually try to reduce greenhouse gases. Replace the incandescent bulbs in your house with higher efficiency bulbs or turn out half the bulbs in your house. Stop driving your minivan or SUV when there is only one person in the vehicle. Turn down your thermostat and put on a sweater. Do something meaningful and not symbolic.

Earth Hour, combined with our sham of a recycling program, makes people feel good enough about themselves that they feel no need to to anything else the rest of the year.

"So, I'll just hop into my CAR and drive to the store down the street to buy some refills for my Swiffer Wet Jet and my Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, which aren't recyclable and have a huge carbon footprint per pack, but it's alright, because I recycled my newspaper, which will have to be processed again and in a more environmentally taxing way than material made from sustainable forests, which act much like a field of potatoes. Y'know, because our landfills are filled to the brim! And soon, we'll be knee-deep in trash! I care about my environment. But only if it doesn't affect me too much! Like, I'll turn my lights off for an hour, but that's it!"

Bravo.

i really don't get the reaction from a few of you guys. your indictment of people that drive suv's and do douchy things is an indictment of those people, not of earth hour. if all they get out of it is that one hour without lights equates to being green, then they're probably worthy of some criticism. but that is clearly a misunderstanding of what the event is about. that's not a criticism of earth hour, that's a criticism of people.

You've touched on it. What do those people take away from Earth Hour? I'd argue it does more harm than good. Like, there are people who think that if they do that one hour, all's well. Or - slighty unrelated - if they rinse out their jars and cans for their blue box and bundle up their newspaper and cardboard for their grey box, they're doing their part. It's way bigger than that, but to them? That's all it is.

i agree with you to an extent, but i still think that's just an issue with the people that think that way. it's an advertisement for energy conservation. anyone who thinks a one-time promotional event is substitute for a long-term commitment is not getting the message.

The problem with Earth Hour is that its hypocritical

For example

If coke really cared about earth hour why don't they use refillable containers for their products rather that dumping thousands of canned and plastic containers in our landfills or going into recycle boxes in which most never bet recycled.

Give me a break with earth hour. Do something that actually helps the earth please.

Woops! I forgot that Earth Hour was on Saturday night... oh well, I'll make up for it by keeping my lights off for a whole 8 hours while I'm sleeping.

I must've looked like a douchebag last night, having the only house on my street with lights on at 8:30.
