the computer help thread

I think i remember Mr. M suggesting way back when to set up a thread like this. I just happen to need some computer advice at the moment, so this seems like a good opportunity to make a thread like this.

My question:

Can anyone tell me the cheapest way to make a PC wireless. I believe one can buy usb wireless adaptors from pretty much any computer store for around $20. Has anyone had experience with such things? are they good?

Aar_Canada 02-24-2011 11:26 AM

I just bought a Belkin wireless router ($45) which is fabulous. They have a USB adapter for 30 bucks.

fancylad 02-24-2011 11:38 AM

i don't need a router as I already have a wireless signal via my modem. I just have to move the modem into another room and i don't want to do the really really long cable thing. Just trying to make a desktop PC be able to connect to a wireless network.

Aar_Canada 02-24-2011 11:41 AM

Yeah, I was just saying that it's quality stuff for a relatively good price.

Buy the D-Link DWA-125 Wireless 150 USB Adapter at TigerDirect.ca

fancylad 02-24-2011 11:54 AM

thanks acie. I was wondering about those types of usb devices.

Obviously they seem easy to set up and are cheap enough, but i wasn't sure how good the connection would be. I'll get something like if not that exact one. :v:

*cough* buy all computer stuff from my dad *cough*

Aar_Canada 02-24-2011 12:23 PM

I threw my D-Link router in the snow in the backyard and bought the Belkin. I was having problems with it right out of the box and the customer support was ass.

my dad won't buy a wireless router because he's afraid the wireless waves are harmful

i'm not joking

can anyone help me out with that?

They are harmful. Not only that, they carry mind controlling messages from the government.

Also, they make you impotent and bad at math.

Just ask my limp-dick friend who can no longer add. He's quite upset.

This is a decent blog post on it:

Personally, I have had mixed results with the USB sticks. I did not find that any of the 4 I tried were particularly durable and signal strength was not great. You can get PCI and PCI-E wireless cards for dirt cheap and they're simple to install.

Newegg.ca - Rosewill RNX-G300LX IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Wireless Card Up to 54Mbps Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, 802.1x, WPA, WPA2, AES, TKIP with 2 dBi Antenna

yeah i thought about those however, i have a smaller than normal tower (it's basically half the size and everything sits on its side). So i'm not sure how much space i have to work with at the back of the PC.

fancylad 02-24-2011 01:41 PM

see Ligeia, this is the tower i have (antec minuet). I don't think i can accomodate a wireless card like that.

Ligeia 02-24-2011 01:51 PM

I have a friend with a Minuet and I think he has a wireless card. I'll chat with him and see how he did it. I'm fairly sure that a short, right-angle riser will do the trick for you if everything is on its side (although, if you mean it is the usual install, you should be able to poke through the bottom where it looks like 4 vents).

nice to see this up and running...could be a valuable addition to the forum

i've considered upgrading all my software to Windows 7 and i have 2 questions regarding the move

can i use the software on more than one computer ? (such as Norton's)

does it upgrade for XP ? (running XP on my desktop and Vista on my laptop)

simple questions, i know :o....but i needed to ask :)
