Default computer help

Recently i downloaded an album via torrents and i think it has a corrupt file or something. Basically there is one mp3 file that doesn't play or do anything. It's named normally and should be a song, but it just won't play. Even weirder is that i can't delete it or DO anything to it. It's just there. I can't rename it, i can't change its properties and i can't delete it or move it to the recycle bin. WTF!

So i have two questions:
1. does anyone think it could be harmful to keep this on my computer? Could it be a virus or something of that sort?

2. Is there ANY way that i can delete it? Maybe through safe mode or something?

Any help would be appreciated.

There are some programs that can delete most archives that windows usually doesnt let you. I think TuneUp and Ccleaner can do the job. You may want to wait for a better recommendation from another person before downloading anything though.

Download the free program : Unlocker

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

It will find out what program is holding on to the file (might be your Torrent proggy) and terminate the program and delete it. It will even delete it on the next boot up if it's really stuck.

Oh Fancy, I had kind of the same problem. I downloaded an album a few weeks ago and there's one song that plays for 15 seconds and that's it - don't know what to do.

hmmm.. the thing is that my torrent program is closed. Basically, i can't imagine any program would be "holding on to the file."

Anyways, do you guys think that there is anything harmful to the computer on this file? or should i just ignore it?

Was the torrent downloaded and Ares file or soething similar?

If it was then the program Ares is holding it.

Tuneup Utilities will show you everything on computer at startup and you could find it there.

Only other thing you could do is run you virus scan and Malware then try deleting it from there(mabey a restart)

umm.. i don't really understand what i mean.

The whole torrent was downloaded . I noticed a problem when i added the album into my itunes. It didn't add properly. Then i went into the album's folder and i noticed that there was one song (the mp3 file in question) that wasn't right. so i added every song into itunes one at a time (except for the broken one) and they all work fine.

Personally, i don't even think this one mp3 file is a virus or anything. I just think it's a "corrupt" file. and i want to delete it, but i can't.

Gotcha, use tuneup utilities, it should remedy the problem.

Judging by your avatar amongst other things, you may find it hard to believe that some of us don't share the same internet habits as you, but thanks for coming out Jeff. Next time i need your advise i will PM you.

ANYWAYS... back to the issue at hand. I tried Raptorman's unlocker, but it didn't work. As i suspected, it wasn't being used by another program. I don't know... I think i'll try a program called Moveonboot. apparantly it lets you handle files before windows starts up or something. I'll do some more research.

I don't even think this one "song file" is doing anything bad to my computer, but now it's just really pissing me off. I want to delete the damn thing if it's the last thing i do. lol.

I'm more of a unix guy myself than a dos guy but i believe you can list directories by issuing

DIR to list directories.

CD [directory name] to change into it

del [filename] to delete the file.

I've ran into the same issues as you before and deleting them through DOS always seemed to work.

Since you refuse to get the unlocker software (a staple of mine for years) you can delete it in safe mode.

Keep tapping F8 during startup to get to a startup selection screen. Choose safe mode...go deleting. Easier than dos.
