Default Caster Semenya

Mokgadi Caster Semenya (born 7 January 1991) is a South African middle-distance runner and world champion. Caster won gold in the 800 metres at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics with a time of 1:55.45 in the final.

Following Semenya's victory at the 2009 World Championships, suspicions were raised about her gender. Semenya stated she was unconcerned about the rumours or the verification and that she considered boycotting the medal ceremony as a result. The IAAF's handling of the case has spurred many negative reactions. A number of athletes, including retired sprinter Michael Johnson, have criticised the organization for its response to the incident. Prominent South African civic leaders, commentators, politicians, and activists have characterized the controversy as racist, as well as an affront to Semenya's privacy and human rights.

The IAAF said it only made the sex test public after it had already been reported in the media, denying charges of racism and expressing regret of "the allegations being made about the reasons for which these tests are being conducted." The federation also explained that the motivation for the test was not suspected cheating but a desire to determine if Caster has a "rare medical condition" giving her an unfair competitive advantage. The president of the IAAF stated that the case could have been handled with more sensitivity. On 7 September 2009, Wilfred Daniels, a manager for middle distance, resigned. According to Daniels, he resigned because he and other officials failed to tell Semenya she was being subjected to tests to determine her sex.

Speaking about the gender row in an interview with the South African magazine YOU Semenya later said "I see it all as a joke, it doesn't upset me. God made me the way I am and I accept myself". Semenya also took part in a makeover with the magazine.

A source close to the IAAF reported that scans and examinations have revealed that Semenya is intersexed, and is biologically a hermaphrodite. Caster possesses internal testes, and thus produces three times more testosterone than women, and has no womb or ovaries.

i was going to start a thread about her yesterday as well.

It's a pretty messed up situation... must be embarassing for her and her family, but at the same time, she put herself out there 'for the world to see'. whether or not she or her family knew about her make-up would also play a big factor in this.

I suppose genetically she has somewhat of an advantage over the rest of the cometition (however small or big that may be), so i don't know how 'fair' it is with her in the field.

It will be interesting to see what is decided.

the only thing i want to add is that i disagree with the South African allegations of 'racism' being a factor here. Personally i can't see why anyone would cry racism in this case, but that's just me.

Less is more. More or less. But mostly less. Or should that be more?

I think from what I've heard, that there's a very good chance that she had no idea. If that's the case then you have to feel for her. There's supposed to be a good chance for her to keep her medal at least, but she won't be allowed to compete again.

The only way Racism could have been brought up (maybe?), is if she was found to be a full fleged female and they looked like they were on a witch hunt and found to be way off.

I see an HBO movie about this in early 2010??

I want "her" (whatever) to be allowed to continue to race.

I was actually talking about this last night with a chick last night and she thought it was unfair to the other competitors.

While that may be, I think that it is more unfair not to let her race. We need to accept people in society for who they are and be inclusive.

Yes she has an advantage but it was a natural advantage from birth. That's like saying that it's not fair for Lebron James to be so athletically gifted! I guarentee his biological make-up is a lot different than mine or many other people's in the league.

I want her to continue to race.

I think what they will do is tell her she can't race anymore but allow her to keep her medals.

While i agree with your intentions, I disagree with the principle.

Really, only women should be allowed to compete with other women in internaitonal track and field. Anyone can compete in the NBA or any pro league. there is no rule based on gender.

If she is genetically not a woman, it's not really fair to the others.
