Thumbs down Canada's sports coverage is getting more pathetic?

I was listening to the Fan 590 again today and heard Jack Armstrong and E. Smith talking about how shitty the coverage of all sports other then Hockey is in this country and how most stories that are bigger then hockey on any given day is often pushed aside as the cover/lead story. Eric was saying that ESPN in the U.S leads off SportsCentre with what ever is the top story, sometimes that story is Hockey other times it's Baseball, basketball,Football etc.... Jack made a good point, he's been working here for 12yrs and he never understood how an Atlanta-Columbus hockey game takes the lead story when a Canadian team in another sport such as the Raptors is pushed aside, he said there seems to be less and less balance. And i have to agree it's getting worse if that's even possible.

Then i went to RealGm and saw this posted:

Quote:
I consider myself to be a sports fan.
even though these are the dog days of summer, I am surprised, nauseated and bored to tears with the BREAKING NEWS of the men's hockey team getting together to scrimmage and practice. Its August. the Olympics are less that 1/2 a year away. a meaningless practice: is this really what the Canadian sports pulse is beating about?

everything about this week's practice amazes me. for example, the FAN590 has paid for Howard Berger to be flown down to Calgary and to cover the latest developments. all local and national papers have this practice as their sports section cover story. and this is the morning after a Toronto rookie pitcher throws almost 6 innings of no-hit ball.

even the Raptors' latest moves have drummed up some summer interest...but that's been surpassed by a crappy pre-training camp skate.

so after looking at the latest studies published that show the increase in popularity of non-traditional Cnd sports like soccer and basketball and the decline in hockey participation and popularity in Toronto's youth, I wonder out loud as to whether or not this hockey non-story is a story due to myopathy from media execs? or is this practice really a big to-do and i've missed the boat? you would think that the latest data coming in would result in networks or papers jumping all over the Raptors' bandwagon to capture and build on their youth audience. or is this possibly a case of white men in suits ignoring the "new Canadian" sports and sticking to what they think their audience wants to hear about and read?

anyways, thought it would be cool to get your perception on this
RealGM • View topic - Cnd Olympic men's hockey team practice: really #1 story?

More and more people i know seem to feel this way and imo the over the top media saturation of Hockey is hurting the sport. Just look at the comments on that board.

Ya, like I was watching TSN and they did a whole story about how Babcock was mixing up the lines in practise. I mean really? We're talking bout practise, not, not a game, not a game, we talking bout practise. What are we talking about man? Practise?

Okay, all jokes aside, that is pretty poor when you dedicate a whole 10 minute segment to how Canada hockey is mixing up its practise lines.

Is it me or is it getting worse since the Lockout ended. And now that these latest numbers about Hockey followers have declined among teenagers (Hockey 3rd favorite sport among teens in T.O) it seems like they can't stand it and are shoving it down our throats even more. I was listening to that moron Deacan last week on the Fan and he deticated a whole hour to the topic (teens losing interest in hockey), and guess what he talked about the whole time.....? Well Mr. Deacan went on for an hour about "What can we do to keep Hockey number one"?? Never mind talking about ther other sports and possibly why they're getting popular...how can Hockey stay number 1? How about get your heads out of your asses, how about less is more?

And now they send what appears to be a couple dozen reporters to Alberta to cover practices? WOW

And don't even get me started on that monstrosity they call "Trade deadline day marathon"...Yikes

What can you do? The canadian national team charged $80 for 3 PRACTICES in calgary. I mean not the game, but PRACTICE!! HOLY SHIT talk about scam artists. It's like playing with die hard fans feelings for christ sake! But hey imma basketball/baseball guy. After that football then NHL. But I respect HOCKEY. I think it's a good sport, but I have to blame the leafs for it. I grew up half my life in new jersey and half in toronto, and toronto maple leafs didn't do a goodjob in getting my attention. Carter sure did ..

i think ultimately its about people suffering from an inferiority complex when it comes to not only sporting events, but other things political. i've seen and heard people take second and third mortgages out on their houses so their kids could play hockey. each and everyone of those parents actually believed that their child was going to play in the NHL. somehow i think if our hockey teams fail then it's treated as a national crisis. like somehow if it happens we'll all be a little more american or whatever it is we came from or identify with.

the only thing i hate more than hockey hockey hockey, is when puckheads try to talk about something other than hockey. i mean, it's ridiculous, but it's almost as bad as when they talk about cricket once a year.

It's not much different from past years. At least they are talking about the national team and not the Leafs. I can remember way too much talk about the Leafs throughout the summer.

I think it also speaks to the interest in baseball dwindling even further.

It's to be expected. This is hockey country. What do you want?

Just don't watch the sports channels..or get a satellite and watch ESPN.

you guys are a self centered bunch of pussies.

The Toronto Blue Jays/ Argonauts are very VERY shitty and boring this year. You can't get 15,000 people to the Dome to see a game when it seats about 50K, an dnobody seems to care about football so why the hell would you push that as a lead story????

The Raptors...... absolutely fuck all going on. Period. We have not ONE FUCKING htread on here that speaks of any recent news, so why run anything abou them in Toronto right now???????

In Canada, Olympic events are popular, and Hockey is massive. People care about this whether you all like it or not. Ratings don't lie, deal with it.

I get so tired of the chips on the raptor faithfuls shoulders... wah wah wah nobody cares about Bargnani's latest 10 point 4 board outbreak in a EURO qualifying tourny... boohoo, Bosh's latest Youtube isn't getting highlighted at the top of the hour.

What a joke.

It's not as though there's any significant hockey news going on either. That doesn't stop the mainstream sports media in Canada from flogging that dead horse.

Maybe the lack of coverage of our beloved Raptors and the game of basketball is what brings us hardcores to places like RF. There is likely a direct correlation between the b-ball coverage in Canada and the number of Raptor fans who seek their fix online.

Yeah but it doesn't have to be about the "shitty" canadian teams. They should be keeping us up to date on SPORTS in general. That's how I feel about it.

Whatever is the TOP of sports should be there. TSN is basically a hockey channel.

I'll tell you this, night of the NBA draft who watched sports centre? It wasn't the top story that night...That is fucking stupid.

Exactly. The fact is, people that say hockey is Canada, so deal with it.....are of course Hockey fans and have no problem with the insane coverage and lack of balance when it comes to sports coverage accross the board. And the ratings argument is bullshit as well, the fact is 1 in 25 now watch HNIC every saturday night in this country and the numbers continue to decline. This will always be a Hockey Nation, which is fine. But it's an ever evolving country with many different cultures and the declining interest in hockey will only get worse imo. People, and stations like TSN need to deal with that or go on keeping their heads in the sand.

I think the sports coverage in this country is more about what the media outlets thinks the market wants than what the market actually wants.

IMO, it's really a case of Canadian viewers being told what to focus on than anything else.

I agree, it's always been hockey-hockey-hockey, and these networks think it's always going to be that way. The thing is it backfired imo. I know myself and others i know have been turned off of hockey, and alot of it is because of the over the top coverage of hockey, and how alot of these broadcasts seem to really hate when another sport gets any kind of attention, taking away any kind of spotlight off of hockey for a second.

All i have to say is "NHL trade deadline day" and most of my friends laugh their asses off. It's becoming a joke. Less is more should be something TSN should look at. The lead story should be whatever is the top sports story of the day, otherwise change your name to THN & Hockeynet.

The ratings don't lie. Even when the Raps are on CBC, they get killed by HNIC or even the juniors. You know, if there was less hockey coverage, I bet a ton of Canadians would complain. All TSN is doing is feeding into what their public wants. The only station that caters to more basketball and other sports other than hockey is the Score.

Is there even anyone on TSN that is associated with basketball? Like a specific reporter?

They turn to Rod Black to call games because he is the emerg guy (I actually REALLY respect that about him) but he's no expert.

I think the score does a pretty job balancing their sports coverage!

It's for that reason that i don't even watch sportsdesk/center or connected anymore. Especially now that i'm boycotting the Jays, i just flat out don't care about sports coverage.

I actually haven't watched TSN or Sportsnet recap shows for over a year.

yup. the score is honestly the only watchable highlite show. I also love that they cover soccer well too.

Accross the country interest in hockey is down. But overall coverage with other sports is piss poor and when hockey is on 24/7 of course the ratings are going to be higher. The fact is the only major sports franchise in this country outside of hockey is in Toronto. Montral/Ottawa/Calgary/Edmonton/Vancouver all don't really have any team other then Hockey (i exclude CFL b/c it sucks and imo it's not a major league sport).

The numbers in Toronto for Hockey are down especially among younger people, why.... alot more choices. The rest of the country has nothing other then Hockey therefore they have locxal interest in their hockey team, so of course hockey ratings are higher, duh!
