Default buying a used bicycle

Not sure if there are some bicycle guys amongst us here, but i need some advise on two fronts.

The first is tips that i should use when buying a used bicycle. When looking at a bike, are there things / tests that i should do to check that the bike is in proper working order. gears? brakes? Honestly i've never bought a bike myself and my shitty clunker from high school finally died this summer.

Secondly, and this one may be limited to those of you who live here, but do you know of any good bike shops that also sell used bikes? I know of 2, but i'm hoping to go to as many as i can.

There are lots of bikes for sale on Craigslist, but to be honest a lot of the ones I checked out this spring and summer were not well maintained and people expected way too much for what they were selling. I finally ended up buying a brand new bike at a good price. There should be some good sales right now for brand new bikes with stores trying to get rid of this years stock.

These girls could probably give some good advice on buying a bicycle.

actually i wouldn't mind a half decent road bike (lots of nice bike paths / trails around my neighbourhood) and that's why i'd like to get one used and not have to fork out $1000.

I'd settle for a nice hybrid though.

Fancy, as long as all the welds are solid there is nothing else that cant be easily replaced or repaired.

Get a full suspension mountain bike and use it on the road?

Fancy, I highly recommend picking up a hybrid. Highly.

My only advice, just make sure it's sturdy and no rust anywhere. Anything else could easily be picked up at a bike shop.

I coincidentally came across this review of bikes today. I'm not a bike guy so I can't vouch for it's usefulness, but I thought I'd pass it along just in case it was of some help.

Go to Cycle Solutions on Parliament, ask for wil or Kale and tell them Craig from ProudFM sent you.

I may be waaaaay late on this, but for me, unless you personally know the individual selling the bike and trust them, I'd be very careful with this. Stress cracks in mountain or road bikes can be really damaging and put your safety in jeopardy. You might not even be able to see them developing. It's more prevalent in mountain bikes (more stress on the bike), but even still, beware.

You might be better off waiting for the Toronto Bike Show in the spring. I got a KHS Hardtail Alite mountain bike worth about $1000 for $500. Lots of shops give great deals and get you set up with a bike that fits your needs.

5 to 10 years ago you could by them for 5-10 bucks from a junkie here on the street any day, lol. Doesn't happen so much any more. I never legally bought a second hand bike though, at least not a fancy one. Only brand new. Just a city brick as we call them here.
