Default Breaking backboards

Here's a vid of the show "Sports Science." This episode try's to bust a myth of whether it is possible to break one of the newer NBA backboards that are used today. It shows Amare trying to break that backboard with like 50 attempts.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. But Amare has a lot of power in his dunks you can't lie about that. It's just that when he hangs there's not enough weight.

Calderon couldn't even smash a Fisher Price backboard if he tried.

The real key to shattering a backboard is to take off of one foot from farther away than normal and dunking with two hands. This seems to breakaway the rim with the force of one's body weight dropping downward rather than a distributed amount of weight being spread through two arms simply pulling on the rim.

I've broken my driveway backboard once before like 5 years ago. It was one of those plastic Huffy non-breakaway rim ones.

The new design is flawless. The only way one gets busted now is if there is a pane of glass with a defect that went unnoticed.

Why the simple physics needed to create a tougher rim wearn't applied in the early 80's when Chocolate thunder was crushing boards like fine china is beyond me.

I believe that was in the 70's. However, in the 80's the NBA introduced the breakaway rim. However, people like Shaq still just had too much power and they just pulled the rim so far down that they snapped it apart from the backboard. Then in the late 90's they introduced these new Shaq proof hoops which had the breakaway rim connected a steel arm which carried all the way down to the floor.

LOL.

Shaq had his fair share of those.

...I'd like to see Howard do that.
