I think it's a fairly common theme in movies, television, literature. I don't think they were making any sort of point.

There arnt making a point. Just playing off recent fears in the USA. Everything has a terrorism/freedom slant these days.

It went beyond the common fear theme. There was the torture and lack of judicial process, the need to act pre-emptively rather than ethically, and the whole civil rights angle as an argument - though largely ignored by the majority that doesn't necessarily want to know how it all goes down. And there is the whole lowering of standards to the basest level out of a sense of necessity.

Where have you guys been for the last ten years? It didn't work as an analogy in more ways than one I guess.

It makes sense.

And maybe I'm dumb or confused, but did they ever explain how the first person was affected??

Not to mention the dude being pretty innocent all things considered, but needing to be kept captive, a la most of those at Guantanamo. There was definitely an attempt at making a point. It didn't work at all though. There's no equating the situations.

I think that their point could have been driven home better if Randall hadn't shot at them. As it stands he could very easily be considered an "enemy combatant".

Not really - enemy combatants don't get held indefinitely under ordinary circumstances so that isn't the problem. The problem is that the US is not under any kind of threat as depicted on this show, and is well equipped to defend itself under any circumstance. To suggest that a few extremists amounted to a situation where all of civilization was close to being snuffed out is just a terrible stretch.

Where's the proof it was supposed to be one? I think it was used simply to illustrate a mood change and a change on Rick's part related to the tension between he and Shane. Also, to make Dale's death more poignant and show a change in annoying Carl.

I think you're reading too much into a horror show produced by horror people.

...that failed in attempting to rise to a higher level.

I suppose the previous episodes had no Shakespearean elements whatsoever. The show is just made by a bunch of hacks in a trashy genre? There's a lot more to this show than scary zombies and gore with soap opera plot lines. And a lot of it has worked quite well. The amount of ethical dilemmas portrayed and further discussed has been right in our faces more than any other elements of light entertainment.

Not sure how you can say this based on the state that the world is in (in the show).

It's in a pretty bad state no? You think that the threat of things blowing up now and again is the equivalent of a plague descending and leaving mob rule in place? It's just not at all the same. A country that enjoyed the upper hand as a superpower cannot sensibly have moral comparisons drawn relative to a ragtag group facing extinction. The attempt might have been admirable in its purpose, but it was contrived and brought with it all kinds of further contrivances. Like a guy that is pushing himself away from the group all of a sudden putting himself in the position of torturing some guy, with no explanation or motivation evident.

Walking dead needs its own thread.
I plan on watching season two, but I am getting play by play action here. Its a bit ridiculous..

On another note. I just started Justified. So far Timothy Olyphant is playing the same type of character as in Deadwood. And.......I love it.

not that i can recall
found it interesting that the 2 security guards (cops ?) in "18 miles out" were turned but Shane and Rick said there were no bite marks...something was mentioned about possible scratches but it seemed like the writers were hinting at something else instead (just can't decipher what it was )

Yep, I noticed that too. That'll definitely be something that comes up... likely the whole story of how the first ones turned.

Good call.

spartcus is a much better show.
as is shameless

i like walking dead but i continually hope for a zombie to kill anyone of the characters, or for a big bomb to explode instantly destroying them all.

only reason to watch the walking dead is to see zombies/
